Utilities Electronics Tech

Summary:  Responsible for maintaining electrical, instrument and related control equipment at Utilities Water Treatment Plant, Bob Derrington Wastewater Treatment Plant and off-site facilities.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain electrical and instrumentation equipment and parts in working order.
  • Work with various DC and AC electrical voltages including wiring single and 3-phase equipment.
  • Install and maintain conduit and wire/cabling, control panels, motor switch gear, breaker switches, flow and pressure transmitters, flow meters and other instrumentation common to water and wastewater plants and systems.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are adequate and in working order.
  • Monitor and facilitate project progress for compliance with Utility Department goals.
  • Maintain plant lighting system.
  • Keep plant supervisor informed of equipment conditions and ensures completion of required paperwork.
  • Must have and maintain a cell phone for City use to hold this position.
  • Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

  Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High school diploma or GED required and ONE year of experience at installing and troubleshooting motor controls and various other problems in industrial or commercial settings. Prefer industrial or commercial experience wiring single and 3-phase equipment, 480, 220, 110 voltages.

Knowledge of:

  • Tools and equipment used in operation and maintenance of W/WW facilities
  • Methods, practices, and standards for compliance to W/WW regulations.
  • Operational characteristics and methods used to inspect, test, and repair electrical assemblies.
  • Use and care of typical electrical test instruments and hand tools.
  • OSHA safety rules and regulations, and safety standards in utility plant environments.

Ability to:

  • Work under varying job conditions and weather.
  • Use self-contained breathing apparatus or other required safety equipment.
  • Read schematics

Skill in:

  • Interpreting and applying technical standards and procedures, state rules and regulations, and City policies and procedures.
  • Monitoring and assessing W/WW plant operations, and identifying maintenance and safety issues.
  • Reading technical documents and schematics.
  • Reading and interpreting gauges and recording devices.
  • Closely following verbal and written instructions, and operating and safety procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.

License and certification requirements: A valid Texas State Driver's License is required.   Preference may be given to the applicant with Journeyman or higher electrical or other control license or certifications. Available for 24 hour call.

Physical demands and working environment:  Work is performed in W/WW Treatment Plan facilities; required to perform moderate physical work and lift and carry up to 20 pounds. Physical dexterity is required to work in confined spaces and use precision tools and equipment.  City approved safety shoes must be worn.
