Summary: Under close supervision, assists Equipment Services Department (ESD) fleet Mechanics.

Essential Functions-- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • As directed, assists Mechanics with repairs and maintenance on fleet vehicles and equipment; maintains shop facility, cleans work areas, cleans up spills, and disposes of lubricants and chemicals in compliance with safety regulations and ESD procedures; duties may vary according to job assignment.
  • Learns to inspect vehicles and equipment, and perform minor repair, maintenance, and cleaning tasks.
  • Supports the departmental operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

 Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred; AND 3 months of automotive servicing experience. 

Knowledge of:

  • State and City safety rules and regulations, including safety practices in a shop environment.

Skill in: 

  • Learning to inspect and perform minor repairs on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Following and maintaining ESD safety standards.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

 License and certification requirements: A valid Texas State Driver's License is required. A Texas State Commercial Driver's License Class A is required within three (3) months of hire. Must also obtain Texas State Vehicle Inspection License with three (3) months of hire. 

Physical demands and working environment: Work is performed in fleet repair and maintenance facilities; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment. City approved safety shoes must be worn.
