The City of South Portland is looking to hire a full-time Facilities Manager to manage and coordinate the optimal functioning and maintenance of City buildings and facilities, and supervise custodial staff.


Under the direction of the City Manager’s office, or Designee, the Facilities Manager works in conjunction with

City departments and management to maintain, monitor, inspect, repair and improve city buildings/facilities and building systems, including mechanical, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, generators, building security and safety, in compliance with local, state and federal codes and regulations.


The Facilities Manager prepares an annual budget, and monitors expenditures, for routine and preventative maintenance of City buildings.  The Facilities Manager assists city departments in developing budgets for larger renovations, installations, capital improvements, energy conservation and sustainability projects.  The Facilities Manager also assists in the preparation of bid specifications, RFPs, and vendor contracts.


The Facilities Manager trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates the work of custodial staff assigned to work in City buildings.


Job Requirements:


Ability to read and comprehend complex electrical, mechanical and instrumentation control systems;

ability to work productively and cooperatively with the administration, department heads, managers, supervisors, safety coordinator, city employees, vendors, contractors and the general public; ability to maintain accurate records and reports; ability to utilize computer software and information technology for effective communications, budgeting, and monitoring of building systems and controls; technical knowledge of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC systems, generators and building security systems; knowledge of workplace safety practices and compliance; excellent customer service skills; analytical and problem-solving ability; organizational, time management and project management skills




Any combination of technical skills related to buildings and facilities, prior maintenance experience in an organization with multiple buildings, or prior management experience, and education that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; Bachelor’s Degree in Facilities Management, Facilities Engineering, or related qualification(s) such as project management, business management or construction management, is preferred; five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in facilities management and/or maintenance, including 3 to 5 years of administrative and supervisory responsibility; prior experience working with public buildings, a plus; Valid Class C driver's license and access to vehicle for work use.
