Inspect a variety of structures and facilities including new construction, tenant's improvements, hospitals, school, airports, residential care facilities and surgery centers to ensure compliance with State and local fire codes.
 
Perform inspections relating to weed abatement, fire alarms, fire sprinkler systems, medical gas and fire suppression systems. 
 
Inspect underground fire mains, fire hydrant lines, above ground sprinkler piping, fire extinguishing systems, and smoke and heat detection devices; observe hydrostatic and other testing as required. 
 
Coordinate inspection activities with other departments and outside agencies.
 
Meet with citizens, organizations and civic groups; conduct oral presentations and provide information and training on fire codes, local ordinances, fire prevention and fire and life safety issues.
 
Assist the Deputy Fire Marshal by reviewing assigned diagrams and specifications to ascertain conformance with applicable fire codes; read and interpret blueprints to ensure compliance with approved plans. 
 
Confer with architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field and office regarding fire and building codes, local ordinances and state laws.
 
Receive and investigate complaints of fire hazards including abandoned buildings, locked exits, overcrowding, and dry vegetation. 
 
Meet with citizen groups, organizations, contractors, engineers and developers; conduct oral presentations and provide information on fire codes, fire prevention and life safety. 
 
Conduct research activities; gather information and compile various of reports. 
 
Provide support at the front counter and over the telephone; provide information and respond to questions from the public regarding codes and local and state laws. 
 
Maintain files and records on inspection activities, programs and investigations. 
 
Assist with the planning and coordination of special events and activities as they relate to fire safety; conduct inspections of special events to ensure compliance with permitting requirements; attend special events to ensure appropriate access and safety requirements are met.
 
Assist in the training of fire prevention personnel by providing technical assistance as necessary.
 
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
