Windsor Heights, Iowa (population 4860) is seeking candidates for the position of Public

Safety Director/Police Chief. Windsor Heights is part of the Des Moines, Iowa, metropolitan area (population 611,549). Windsor Heights is a small community offering the highest quality public services for both our residents and our businesses. The community is safe and friendly, located at the center of the metropolitan area with convenient access to the entire region. We offer the perfect balance of metro amenities and genuine community atmosphere.

The Public Safety Director serves as the Chief over the Police Department and the Administrative Head of the Fire Department
Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, fire science, public administration, political science, or related field. Master’s degree preferred

  • FEMA Incident Command Certification at IS-100, 200, 700, and 800 within the first two years

  • Iowa Firefighter I certification within in the first year Experience

  • Prior supervisory experience of five years, three of which should be in a command level position in a law enforcement agency of similar or greater size

  • Experience as a firefighter is desired Salary range and benefits

  • The Public Safety Director/Police Chief is an FLSA exempt position

  • $81,162 to $105,034 annual

  • Paid time off and Holiday Leave,

  • Deferred Compensation plan

    Certification

  • Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification as a peace officer within the first year. Candidates must meet the licensing standards established by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy www.state.ia.us/ilea

  • Valid Iowa driver’s license

  • The successful candidate must pass a post-offer-of employment physical

    examination, including a drug screen.

    Residency

Residency required to within thirty miles of the city limits.
The Public Safety Director/Police Chief is appointed by the Mayor, with approval by the City Council, and reports to the City Administrator.
