The town of Littleton is seeking applications from qualified individuals for the full-time position of Police Chief. Enjoying an ideal location at the crossroad of Interstate 495 and Route 2, Littleton has a land area of 16 square miles and is just 40 miles northwest of Boston and 30 miles from Nashua, New Hampshire. A diverse community, home to over 9400 residents, Littleton boasts a strong school system, an engaged citizen base, quality facilities and a strong financial track record. General Summary: The Police Chief oversees a $2.0 million budget with a highly qualified staff of 32 employees and one canine officer. The Chief must implement policies and work methods that comply with federal, state and local laws and are in response to assessment of community needs. The Police Chief’s responsibilities include planning, directing and coordinating all aspects of department operations and administration; preparing the department’s annual operating budget; providing leadership on law enforcement and public safety issues; and performing a variety of public relations activities with local business and community groups and other law enforcement agencies. The Police Chief must be an active member of the community. Candidates should possess progressive management and leadership skills, unquestioned integrity, a thorough knowledge of police administration and operations, including accreditation requirements from the MPAC. Candidates should demonstrate experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with employees and a community oriented philosophy of working with public safety partners, town departments, the business community and the citizens of Littleton. An Independent Assessment Center will be utilized in the recruitment process to evaluate specific skills and abilities of the applicants. Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or related field and 10 years of progressively responsible experience with at least five years of significant executive level command experience; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Master’s degree highly desirable. Knowledge of MA Police Accreditation requirements preferred. Graduate of Massachusetts Police Academy or equivalent; graduation from Southern Police Institute or FBI National Academy prior to appointment is optimal or within two years of appointment as Chief. Must be certified as a CPR First Responder. Knowledge of IMC CAD and CJIS software preferred. Military experience is beneficial.
