Opening for a Grade 2 position:


A Grade 2 position at the Highway Department:


  • Employees with this classification are expected to operate equipment and perform tasks of lower grade classifications in their group.


  • Operates trucks and other light and heavy equipment to support the needs of the Public Works Department.


  • Performs a variety of maintenance and construction related tasks as assigned.


  • Involves a combination of skilled and semi-skilled work within the Highway Department, in addition to performing general laborer duties such as road patching, brush cutting, mowing, and trucking.


  • Involves operating heavy road maintenance equipment with complex controls in a safe and efficient manner.


  • Requires the ability to work long hours, weekends and holidays as required for snow removal operation as well as other storm cleanup activities.


  • Ability to provide routine maintenance and semi-skilled assistance to the mechanic to all types of equipment.


  • Ability to learn and apply safety standards and practices.


  • Ability to document and maintain records as required.


  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public and other employees.


  • Motivated and able to perform tasks with minimal supervision.


  • Possesses thorough knowledge of Town policies, procedures and practices.


  • Deals with co-workers and external customers, including the general public, efficiently while maintaining high levels of dignity and respect.


Special Requirements:


  • Maine Commercial Driver’s License (CDL B or higher)
  • Ability to operate all types of trucks and equipment common to Public Works.
  • Subject to the Town’s random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Employee in this position, in order to be paid at the level 2 classification, must be able to perform all the duties in all lesser grades in the Public Works Department.
