JOB SUMMARY

Inspects and evaluates properties and structures to ensure compliance with City of Bedford’s codes and ordinances.  Prepares and serves notices to correct violations, and may issue citations or summons for matters of non-compliance.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Patrols the City and responds to citizen complaints noting violations and variances from property codes and ordinances.
  2. Enforces zoning and substandard building regulations.
  3. Inspects premises for overall cleanliness; adequate disposal of garbage and rubbish; and for signs of vermin infestation.
  4. Inspects rental properties and communicates with tenants, landlords, and property owner’s requirements of the Rental Registration Program.
  5. Conducts on-site multi-family inspections and confers with apartment owners/managers and tenants.
  6. Prepares and issues forms, letters, and/or citations notifying property owners and/or tenants of violations, and the time frame allowed for correcting deficiencies.
  7. Schedules and conducts premise re-inspections in accordance with the time frame allowed for compliance.  Reviews history location as a component of determining future and/or progressive action in order to gain compliance. 
  8. Explains requirements of housing standards ordinance to property owners, building contractors, and other interested parties.
  9. Prepare evidence in support of legal actions taken by the City. Testifies in court and/or hearings as necessary.
  10. Attends meetings, cooperates with, and serves as a resource to other City departments, divisions, community groups, and local, state, and federal agencies regarding code enforcement.
  11. May perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.
  12. Regular and timely attendance is required as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional manner.

 

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma / GED plus one year related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Code Enforcement Officer Certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services preferred, or ability to obtain within two years of employment.
