Description:


  • Makes onsite inspections during all phases of construction to ensure compliance with various codes, including those published by the International Code Council (ICC) and the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA);
  • Assists Inspector I's or is assigned with more complex inspections requiring additional experience or knowledge to complete; 
  • Researches and verifies compliance with code, zoning ordinances;
  • Maintains computer records and reports concerning inspections, licenses, permits, certificates, etc.;
  • Consults with engineers, architects, builders, and contractors to discuss plans and compliance with various codes;
  • Compiles information and writes departmental reports and correspondence;
  • Investigates complaints of unsafe, uninhabited, and unsanitary structures;
  • Answers questions in person, on telephone and via email regarding zoning, building ordinance compliance, and citizens' complaints;
  • Provides customer service to other departments and public as needed;
  • Performs onsite license checks of plumbers, electricians and others that are required to be licensed under city ordinance or State and Federal Law; 
  • Provides clerical support to fulfill staffing needs as assigned by the Chief Building Official;
  • Distributes literature and/or answers questions regarding available public services in the area;

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

Inspector II qualifications: 

High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus at three (3) years of experience in building inspections or the construction field; municipal experience preferred; ICC Residential Combo Inspector Certification and Plumbing Inspector License issued by the State Board of Plumbing Examiners, required. Additional, applicant must possess two of the following certifications: Commercial Inspector, Energy Inspector, Commercial Mechanical, Commercial Plumbing, or Commercial Electrical.

Pay range: $22.63 - $27.60

Senior Inspector qualifications:
High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus five (5) years inspection experience; municipal experience preferred; Plumbing Inspectors License issued by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners plus certification by the International Code Council (ICC) for assigned areas of inspections or as deemed appropriate by the Department Director.
Pay Range: $24.95 - $33.65
