JOB SUMMARY

Receives calls from the public and other agencies concerning complaints, crimes, police emergencies and non-emergencies, Fire/EMS, and other calls for service.  Dispatches orders to appropriate police radio patrol units, Fire/EMS and other personnel.  Fulfills job function by performing the following duties.  This position requires working shift hours.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Answers incoming 911 and non-emergency phone calls.
  2. Answers phones in a timely courteous and professional manner.
  3. Gather accurate information from callers and maintain contact with callers when necessary to obtain in-progress information.
  4. Relays instructions or questions from remote unit and comprehend radio traffic received from units and disperse information to units in a clear, concise and understandable manner.
  5. Record calls, broadcasts and complaints received; check for hazard indicators, previous calls and alarm permits, forward information to appropriate personnel; input CAD entries and log teletype information following established guidelines.
  6. Coordinates all Police, Fire/EMS, and other emergency requests, relaying instructions to radio unit concerned.
  7. Prioritizes calls following established guidelines, dispatches appropriate units to calls for service, promptly notifies appropriate supervisor of delayed response to calls for service, and practices proper radio protocol.
  8. Transmits and receives messages between divisions of own agency and other law enforcement agencies; coordinates and relays information, in a timely manner, to other divisions and agencies as needed; notifies appropriate supervisors of unusual situations promptly; and follows established guidelines regarding MDC usage.
  9. Enters information into computer databases ensuring documentation is completed in a timely manner with minimal errors.
  10. Makes inquiries and retrieves information from statewide and in-house computer databases.           
  11. Enters, confirms, and removes warrants into/from computer databases for Municipal Court and C.I.D.  Completes required paperwork associated with the warrants.
  12. May perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.
  13. Regular and timely attendance is required as well as the ability to get along with others in a professional and cordial manner.
  14. Considered as Essential Personnel and required to work scheduled shift regardless of weather conditions.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Basic knowledge of computer-aided dispatch system, operation and utilization of the computerized database, 911 phone system, voice recording system, paging software, weather siren software and other relevant equipment utilized by this position. 
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task through applicant dispatch testing.
  • A minimum keyboarding speed of 35wpm required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. 
  • Ability to write simple correspondence. 
  • Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. 
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS 

High school diploma / GED and no experience required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Valid Texas Driver's License.

Must have certification in Public Safety Telecommunications or be able to obtain certification. 

Must have TCIC/NCIC certification or be able to obtain within 6 months from date of hire. 

Must be able to successfully pass recertification for TCIC/NCIC every two years. 

Must successfully pass state licensing exam (effective January 1, 2014).
