JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, is responsible for the maintenance and care of the Animal Shelter facility to ensure a safe and disease free environment; cares for the animals in the shelter; provides customer service to the public; and assists Animal Control Officers and other staff as requested.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Provides a safe and sanitary environment for the temporary housing of animals by cleaning, disinfecting and maintaining Animal Shelter facility to include cleaning and disinfecting animal cages, kennels, etc., and ensures all are in good working condition and safe for habitation; sweeping and mopping floors; cleaning and maintenance of all equipment and tools used; and maintaining supplies and storage area in a neat and organized manner.
  2. Provides proper care for all shelter animals by feeding, watering, exercising and bathing animals.
  3. Support the front desk and provide excellent customer service to the public, volunteers, and City employees in person or over the phone by providing information, receiving donations, performing adoption procedures and assisting in reclaiming lost animals.
  4. Performs clerical duties to include animal record keeping of intakes, medical history, impound stages and final dispositions; animal licensing, data entry, updating animal profiles, and filing.
  5. Assist with monitoring and observing animal’s temperament, health, and general adoptability of animals to ensure a safe and lasting adoption. Report signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity.
  6. Assist with administering vaccinations, medications and microchips; drawing blood from dogs for heartworm tests; animal euthanasia; and transporting animals to veterinarian clinics for treatment.
  7. Must perform all tasks within safety guidelines, using approved safety methods.
  8. When assigned, respond to public request for removal of deceased animals from the streets and residents home.
  9. May perform other assignments and handle special projects as required.
  10. Regular and timely attendance is required.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred: prior experience in the care and handling of animals. Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Texas Driver’s License.

May be required to obtain the following certificates:

  • Basic certification in Animal Control
  • Euthanasia Certification
