Description:

Canyon, Texas, is situated in the Texas Panhandle, just 14 miles south of Amarillo, and serves as the Randall County seat. With a population of about 16,700 and covering eight square miles, the City is easily accessible via I-27, Highway 60, and I-40. Canyon has become a destination for visitors from around the world, as it is the gateway to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the second largest natural Canyon in the US and the #1 visited State Park in Texas with 467,000 visitors in 2021; the site of the largest history museum in Texas, the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum; and home to the longest running outdoor musical drama, TEXAS, which started in 1965 and has since become the most attended outdoor drama in the United States, seen by more than three million visitors from 100 countries.

The City of Canyon is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader eager to drive economic development initiatives for a Texas Panhandle tourism powerhouse. Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of economic development principles and practices, Texas 4B tax provisions, and public financial administration principles. They should also have experience in economic development and business retention programs as well as grant management.

The ideal candidate will be well-organized, detail-oriented, and skilled in developing marketing plans and benchmark metrics. City leaders desire an individual with excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills who approaches issues strategically. They should function well in a fast-paced — and at times stressful — environment and exhibit a strong supervisory and leadership style that builds up team members, encourages creativity, and inspires innovation.

A bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, or a relevant field is highly recommended, with a master’s degree preferred. Candidates should also have at least three years of related work experience, preferably in the economic development field. Professional certifications within economic development or as a Public Manager, and training provided by the Texas Department of Economic Development or another equivalent agency, are desirable.

The City of Canyon is offering a starting salary range of $79,309 to $116,603 for this position, commensurate with education and experience and a comprehensive benefits package.
