SUMMARY

The purpose of the School Crossing Guard is to provide assistance to children crossing streets, walking to and from school. Duties include holding a sign to control traffic and escorting school-aged children safely across various streets and intersections. Duties will require working outdoors under a variety of weather conditions.

Schedule and assignment locations may vary and will work split shifts. The duty hours are one and one half hours (1 hour 30 minutes) for each shift, morning and afternoon. Employees would only be working a maximum of 3 hours daily. If hired as a substitute school crossing guard, this position works on an on-call basis.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Employs proper signals and all issued equipment designed to assist in control of traffic during peak school traffic hours at designated school zone areas.
  2. Assists school-age children in crossing the street at designated intersections in a safe and orderly manner.
  3. Must be able to hold stop sign above head until children are across the intersection.
  4. Places traffic cones in the street before school begins and removes at end of school as needed.
  5. Promptly notifies the Police Department of pedestrian accidents and real or potential safety hazards that interfere with or impede the safety and/or efficiency of the crossing  
  6. While performing the duties of this position, the school crossing guard is regularly required to stand, walk quickly, hear, speak clearly, occasionally speak/hear over the sound of traffic and work in inclement weather.
  7. Regular and timely attendance is required.
  8. Maintains a positive, friendly, and effective working relationship with the general public and co-workers.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High School diploma / GED preferred but not required.

Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age or older.

 Must have a valid Texas Class C diver’s license or Identification Card and valid automobile insurance. Must have access to reliable transportation.

 

WORK SCHEDULE

Available to work Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
