SUMMARY:

Under supervision, performs professional and technical level work including the review of site, building, and fire protection system plans for compliance with established codes, ordinances, and other applicable regulations, review calculations and plans submitted for fire protection and prevention principles for the protection of life and property.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Serve as a point of contact for designer professionals and contractors;
  • Communicate plan review results, compliance issues, and regulatory or procedural information effectively to customers of varied backgrounds as well as technical expertise;
  • Interface with Fire Marshal Office staff while providing technical support and data to field inspectors as well as other inter-city departments relating to projects; 
  • Interacts with the public in a positive manner and deliver exemplary customer service in a fast paced environment;
  • Will perform plans review under supervision for all projects;
  • Manage their schedule to meet goal of reviewing all plans within 15 business days;
  • Assists in research and review of complex submittals;
  • Prepare letters, memos and draft reports with minimal corrections;
  • Review and interpret site plans, building plans, fire protection system plans, alarm system plans, specifications and calculation submitted for residential tracts, multi-unit residential homes, public assembly, and commercial industrial buildings to ensure compliance with codes, ordinances, and other applicable regulations;
  • Evaluate and determine existing and proposed fire protection and fire alarm systems conformity to construction plans and compliance with a variety of buildings and fire/life safety codes and issues permits and notices;
  • Enforce code requirements for the design, construction and installation of equipment and materials based on an analysis of fire related hazards;
  • Identify and communicate deficiencies of plans, calculations, and specifications;
  • Performs related work as assigned.
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of a bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field or any combination of relevant certifications and work experience may be considered as an equivalent to the completion of a bachelor's degree.                   

Valid Current Driver's License

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:  
  • Applicable laws, regulations and codes related to fire prevention and protection;
  • Basic fire protection principles;
  • Advanced concepts in fire protection methods and materials;
  • Building requirements in the areas of fire protection systems, alarms, hazardous materials, and public safety requirements defined in federal, state, and municipal laws, regulations, and codes;
  • Construction methods and materials;
  • Personal computer operation and relevant software applications.
Ability to:
  • Read, understand, interpret, and enforce codes, ordinances, laws, and regulations; 
  • Read and understand plans, specifications, blueprints, and fire protection systems descriptions; 
  • Evaluate fire protection and life safety systems; work independently and prioritize workload; 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, members of the public, and others encountered in the course of work; 
  • Handle routine and complex code enforcement matters; 
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication;
  • Work successfully in stressful situations with minimal supervision.
Physical Requirements
  • Occasionally walk, stand, and kneel during the shift;
  • Occasionally climb stairs, ladders and other inclined surfaces;
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 25 pounds;
  • Frequently rotate upper trunk to right or left while sitting or standing;
  • Continuously reach below shoulder height and frequently reach above or at shoulder height;
  • Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle.
