Engineer I/II - Project Engineer for the Stormwater Engineering Center

 Come join the Stormwater Engineering Center for an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that is delivering vital stormwater infrastructure within the City of Virginia Beach. 

The advertisement is for four positions which may be classified as an Engineer I or II depending on qualifications and experience of the selected applicant.

Engineer II         Pay Range:  A.13, $63,742.90 - $98,801.50 Engineer II Job Description

The Selected Candidate will be part of a team of talented engineers working in the Stormwater Engineering Center performing a variety of duties of a complex nature related to stormwater engineering projects. Representative work duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist in overall project development including planning, design, engineering, and construction support. Example projects include the City's Stormwater Master Plan Update, Flood Protection Program projects, and Sea Level Wise
  • Review of Complex Drainage plans or studies for various stormwater infrastructure systems including conceptual designs, preliminary engineering reports, cost estimates, design calculations or computations, exhibits, plans, drawings, and specifications for culverts, stormwater conveyance channels, pipes or systems, stormwater management facilities, stormwater pump stations and other specialty devices such as tide gates or barriers
  • Perform hydraulic modeling for the City's Stormwater Master Plans
  • Assist in bid and contract management for design and construction
  • Assist in preparing materials for public meetings

This position offers a hybrid remote and/or flexible working option.

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUM ENGINEER I:
Requires a Bachelors degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) approved engineering or engineering technology program, OR an Associates Degree with six (6) years of progressive experience of engineering level work, or any combination of education and experience acceptable to and approved by, the Virginia Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA) to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

MINIMUM ENGINEER II:
Requires a Bachelor's Degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) approved engineering or engineering technology program with possession of an E.I.T. (Engineer In Training) Certificate AND two (2) years of progressive professional experience;
OR a Bachelor’s Degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) approved engineering technology program WITH possession of a Land Surveyor’s license and two (2) years of progressive professional experience;
OR an Associate’s Degree in Engineering with six (6) years’ progressive professional experience PLUS possession of an E.I.T. Certification, or a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license from the Virginia Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Attachments Required: 

Preferences:

• Working knowledge and/or experience in the design and construction of stormwater projects.
• Strong background/Working knowledge and/or experience with EPA SWMM and/or ArcGIS.
• Excellent technical writing/Effective oral and written and communication skills.
• Experience in planning, presentations and overall project development for a variety of projects.
• Experience working as a Project Engineer on or managing small-sized or mid-sized projects.
• Experience in municipal public works (desired but not required: the field of stormwater engineering)
• Experience in coordinating with Federal, State and Local agencies.
