The City of Gresham is seeking a qualified Structural Engineer to join our Building Development Division within the Community and Economic Development Department.  This position plays a prominent role in promoting the City's organizational value of public service through continuous interaction with the public concerning complex structural plan review activities for the construction, alteration, or repair of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

The City participates in the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), and pays for the full contribution.  This position is represented by the Teamster's Local 223. Employees earn paid time off and sick leave monthly, in addition to paid holidays throughout the calendar year.  As a Structural Engineer, you will enjoy a standardized schedule Monday through Friday.   There may be potential for a hybrid schedule which will be determined at time of hire and organizational needs.

What you will get to do:

Working as a Structural Engineer, you will review complex structural engineering plans for commercial, industrial and residential projects within the City of Gresham, Fairview, Wood Village, Troutdale and East Multnomah County.  This role works under the direction of the Building Official and reviews the submitted structural calculations and Construction documents for compliance with the Oregon State Structural Specialty Code and in accordance with accepted engineering practices. You will also be responsible for conducting engineering studies, analyzing data, and making recommendations on these findings.  Oversight and administration of the division's special inspector program and providing technical assistance and training to building department staff are also important aspects of this position.  Our Structural Engineer performs site visits as needed to observe potential construction conflicts and general construction progress.
 
 This position interacts with a variety of stakeholders. As such, we are seeking someone who is collaborative, team-oriented, and has excellent communication skills.  We value your attention to detail and ability to be self-motivated. The nature of this position requires a high level of professionalism, strong critical thinking skills and flexibility. Using your collaborative skills, you will have opportunities to serve as a liaison within the tri-county region by attending stakeholder meetings and pertinent events facilitated by the state Building Codes Division. You may also work with the Emergency Management Coordinator to establish a well- organized and effective damage assessment program in the event of an emergency or disaster.  You will interact with other City departments, governmental agencies, private developers, consultants, neighborhood and other citizen groups to resolve engineering issues.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills , and abilities to reach an equivalency of 7-10 years will be considered.
 

  • A Bachelor's degree or the equivalent experience in Civil Engineering 
  • Three to six years of increasingly responsible structural engineering experience 
  • Must have a current and valid driver's license.
  • Must have a good driving record according to our driving matrix (see below)
  • Oregon Professional Engineering license (PE) with demonstrated experience designing concrete, timber, masonry and steel structures

 
Preferred Qualifications

  • Oregon Professional Structural Engineering license (SE)
  • Engineering computer software familiarity
  • Knowledge of Oregon State Specialty Codes 
  • Public agency experience 

 
The successful candidate must obtain their Oregon Inspector Certification (OIC) within 30 days of employment and possess a State of Oregon A-Level Plans Examiner certification (ICC Building Plans Examiner Certification B3) and a State of Oregon Residential Plans Examiner certification (ICC Residential Plans Examiner Certification R3) within the first six months of employment.  
 
DRIVING MATRIX: You will be disqualified from this process if you possess any of the following driving infractions:

  • A major traffic offense or accident that results in death or major injury. 
  • Driving under the influence (DUI) offense within the last 5 years.
  • Have more than 3 moving violations within a 3-year period or more than 2 within a one- year period.
  • Have more than 2 accidents within a 3-year period.
