Our City Council has tasked the Planning Division with implementing exciting area plans that focus on existing and new areas, such as the Downtown Master Plan, Pioneer Parkway’s International Corridor Plan, and the Southgate 360 Corridor Plan. With the full support of the City Council and City Management, the Planning Division has added additional staffing in the past year to accommodate these needs. Job Summary

The purpose of this position is to assist the City's Planning and Development Department in long range or current planning activities. This position provides high level planning and project management services to review development requests or implement comprehensive and area plans.

Essential Job Functions

  • Communicates with the public, developers, and contractors over the phone, via email, or at the front counter.
  • Reviews and administrates the land development process by researching unified development code, administering, and specifying required procedures and processes for zoning changes, specific use permits, platting cases.
  • Reviews and prepares staff reports and recommendations by researching past cases, researching the Unified Development Code (UDC), reviewing and discussing with other departmental staff; presenting information to the applicant and preparing a final draft of reports and ordinances to the Planning and Zoning Commission.
  • Reviews applications for Certificates of Occupancy, new commercial building permits, special event permits, and alcohol permits to ensure compliance with the UDC and all other applicable codes.
  • Assists other team members in the division and department as needed.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Over two years up to and including three years.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License, AICP preferred.
  • Advanced - Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents.  Ordinarily, such education is obtained at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Advanced - Ability to write editorials, journals, speeches, manuals, or critiques.   Ordinarily, such education is obtained at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
  • Receives direction: The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. Assignment is reviewed upon completion.
  • Has little to no budgetary responsibility.
  • No responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.
  • Work is governed by broad instructions, objectives and policies.  Requires the exercise of considerable initiative and independent analytical and evaluative judgment.
  • Work may require providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies.  Contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement.  Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation.
