Summary

We are currently seeking an Engineer and/or a Senior Engineer. Both positions will perform high-level engineering related duties, including but not limited to, reviewing and approving site and subdivisions plans and plats, assisting in managing the design and construction of City municipal projects, and regularly interacting with a wide variety of individuals, companies, and organizations.

 

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications

  • Attend meetings with developers, engineers, and other City staff to discuss utility, water and wastewater treatment, drainage/water quality, and transportation elements of proposed development projects.
  • Review plans and plats for site development and subdivision improvement projects for compliance with City Codes and Ordinances in regard to utility, water and wastewater treatment, drainage/water quality, and transportation design.
  • Review utility, water and wastewater treatment, drainage/water quality, and transportation engineering studies and models for compliance with the City’s design criteria.
  • Prepare written technical comments on proposed development projects submitted to the City.
  • Conduct periodic field inspections and assesses construction progress and compliance with codes, plans and specifications, developing solutions for problems and questions and coordinating with engineers, contractors, and inspectors to implement solutions.
  • Present status reports of development projects to Assistant City Engineer and City Engineer, as needed.
  • Review permit applications for franchise utility construction in City right-of-way for compliance with City Codes and Ordinances.
  • Assist in the management of capital improvement projects including budgets, contracts, design, construction, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders including engineers, inspectors, contractors, and other project related individuals.
  • Coach, mentor, train, and develop EIT Engineers on staff.
  • Work closely with other department leaders, staff, engineers, developers, construction inspectors and contractors regarding engineering and public works activities and projects.
  • Respond to citizen, engineer, and developer inquires related to development drainage/water quality, utility, and transportation matters in person, on the phone, and via email.
  • Interact with various regional utility, regulatory and governmental organizations (i.e. Counties, FEMA, TCEQ, TxDOT, and LCRA), and consult with various data sources concerning engineering standards, regulatory compliance and requirements for development activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's of Science Degree (B. S.) from an accredited college or university with an engineering degree or a related field of study.
  • For Engineer position: Minimum of four (4) years of civil engineering experience.
  • For Senior Engineer position: Minimum of six (6) years of civil engineering experience.

 

Required Certificates and Licenses

  • Licensed in the State of Texas as a Professional Civil Engineer (PE), OR, if licensed in another state, the ability to obtain the State of Texas license within six (6) months of hire.
  • Valid Driver’s License. (Approximately 20% driving time in a company vehicle.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Texas Driver’s License or ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days per state law.
  • Experience with municipalities or other government entities.
  • Experience with City of Austin Drainage and Transportation Criteria Manuals.
  • Experience implementing TCEQ Guidelines.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Read and interpret technical information from engineering construction plans and plats.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication.
  • Manage multiple projects at one time.
  • Operate computers using software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and AutoCAD. 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Gather, compile, analyze, and evaluate a variety of data to make sound decisions as it applies to providing required services.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with public officials, superiors, subordinates, and the general public.

 

Physical Demands & Additional Information

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle and feel items; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crawl; talk and hear; and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

Working Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, and precarious places.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally loud.
