GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

Supports, troubleshoots, monitors and reports on all fare collection systems as they are implemented for VIA, including fareboxes, ticket vending machines, mobile ticketing, and other system components/applications. Researches, tests, advises, writes specifications for procurement on various advanced on-vehicle technologies, not limited to, but including digital signage, automated vehicle technologies, smart vehicles, and autonomous vehicles. Performs analysis on system issues, coordinates vendor work, maintains online documentation on projects, installation tasks, maintenance tasks, and coordinates project teams as systems are implemented.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Directs the resolution of issues that impact the daily fare collection system operations.

Manages software and hardware for all ticket vending machines, streetcar/rail station validators, and revenue collection equipment to include upgrades, maintenance, supply stock, and software testing.

Manages new program development and system testing of all fare collection system components and related upgrades, to include firmware upgrades to both hardware equipment and software.

Responsible for program development and system testing of all equipment utilized for custom programming and printing of tickets and passes.

Responsible for coordinating the training of appropriate Fiscal Management staff, as required, when introducing new fare media and/or software.

Researches new technologies to support ongoing projects and future operations that have/will impact revenue and fare collection processes.

Researches new technologies to improve operations, customer experience, and smart vehicle technologies.

Manages procurement projects that introduce new vehicle technologies, including the development of Scope of Work for the procurement of all vehicle technology related procurements.

Creates and manages the security and access of data, and maintains Payment Card Industry (PCI) security.

Performs analysis on system issues, maintains documentation on installation and maintenance tasks, and works on project teams as systems are implemented.

Responsible for overseeing fare collection system-related contractors as needed, such as during project implementation and future implementation of new technologies.

Supervisory responsibility for various employees hired to support VIA’s new fare collection system as specific needs are identified.

Performs other duties as assigned.

This job description excludes marginal functions that are incidental to performing the job. Other duties may exist.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, computer science, technology or related area and at least three years of relevant experience related area or an equivalent combination thereof.

Ideally, three years with IT and experience/usage of technical support tools such as Sharepoint, websites, search engines and other technical assistance tools.

Ideally, experience with implementation projects for large commercial off-the-shelf client/server applications.

Ability to specialize in transit-oriented applications or other large commercial off-the-shelf client/server applications.

Experience in the design and implementation of automated fare vending equipment would be a plus, but is not mandatory.

Experience with on-vehicle systems such as cameras, passenger counters and onboard media signage.

Experience in design and implementation of a routed IP network is a plus.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with users.

Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.

Ability to be on call 24/7 to address security issues that arise with various systems

Ability to understand technical aspects in the repair of electronic devices and possesses the capability to coordinate getting any necessary equipment repairs performed.

Knowledge of software applications for office systems and maintenance software for farebox and ticket vending machine revenue equipment preferred.

Knowledge of electronic and electro mechanical systems.

Effective verbal, written, presentation, project management and organizational skills and ability to multi-task.

Ability to establish, document and communicate decisions in an expeditious manner.

Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Knowledge and understanding of security procedures for the safeguarding and transfer of monies from fareboxes and ticket vending machines.

Must be able to maintain good work attendance.

Must support VIA’s EEO and Diversity Program.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical ability required to be mobile, bend, stoop, reach and move objects weighing 5-25 pounds such as files, supplies, equipment and large heavy reference manuals and books.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Generally works in normal office environment, but will also need to make service-related calls in VIA’s service area.

Requires irregular hours
