Position Purpose

Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in housekeeping, and operation of buildings, and related facilities.

 

Essential Functions

  • Performs minor unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance of open space structures such as restrooms, etc. by performing custodial, maintenance, and other unskilled and skilled trades work.
  • Operates steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other listed equipment as needed.
  • Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building housekeeping and cleaning techniques.
  • Collects and disposes of litter from buildings and parking lot areas.
  • Opens, closes, locks, and unlocks facilities as needed.
  • Responsible for setting up and taking down tables and chairs for various functions and events, and preparing facilities for event use.
  • Maintains records of work completed.
  • Clean restrooms, drinking fountains, offices, fitness center, meeting rooms, elevator, stairwells, etc.
  • Performs custodial work as required and assigned including: changing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; sweeping and mopping floors; vacuuming, shampooing, and steam clean carpets; buffing non-carpeted areas; emptying trash cans and reline cans with liners; cleaning restrooms and replenish supplies; clean spills; clean mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, etc.; dust furniture; clean walls; clean rain gutters; sweep roofs.
  • Clean glass doors and windows, inside and outside of the facility.

Secondary Functions

  • Disinfect and sanitize all Island Metro Shuttles, Restrooms, Facility Offices, Breakrooms, and Gym.
  • Hang pictures, move furniture, move TVs, move tables, help all Transit staff with miscellaneous duties.
  • Responsible for creating inventories for purchasing supplies.
  • Ensures all items are fully stocked; breakroom supplies such as cups, silverware, napkins, and coffee supplies.
  • Ensures driver supply closets have sufficient supplies.
  • Ensures drivers have Island Metro Brochures and necessary PPE.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

Capital and/or Fiscal Responsibility

  • Responsible for adhering to all City of South Padre Island Purchasing Policies while performing purchasing tasks.

             Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, and supplies used in facility custodial work. .
  • Knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
  • Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects such as supply inventory, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and communicate written and oral instruction.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
  • Knowledge of the method to strip wax floors and clean windows.
  • Knowledge regarding cleaners and chemicals.
  • Ability to be on call for emergency situations.

 

Formal Education/Certification/Licenses

  • Valid state driver’s license.

Prior Experience

  • One year of building custodial work.
  • Any combination of education and experience demonstrates the knowledge, and experience to perform the work.

 

 Language Requirements

  • Bilingual: Spanish and English

 

Tools and Equipment Used

 

Miscellaneous janitorial equipment including floor buffers, steam cleaner, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuums, mops, brooms, and dusting equipment; high-speed buffer, ladder, and carpet cleaning machine.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.
