SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

What We Need from You as A Public Safety Dispatcher

Each day presents new and exciting challenges while dispatching for the CITY OF SUGAR LAND PUBLIC SAFETY Department.

As our Public Safety Dispatcher, you will assist citizens in need by gathering information using multi-channel phone systems, TDD and other communications equipment, answering 911 and non-emergency phone calls for Police, Fire, EMS and others, using the CAD system to enter and retrieve information, processing and forwarding calls as required using computer and phone systems. Furthermore, you will provide Police and Fire dispatch services by maintaining radio communications, broadcasting gathered information to Police and Fire personnel based on needs of the request for service. Additionally, you will verify, record and relay information from Police and Fire personnel in the computer system and other records. You will operate State and Nationwide computer systems, including SETCIC, TLETS and NLETS, by maintaining and retrieving information in the database, as well as maintain records, logs and filing systems as required by departmental policy, law, or other rule or directive. This position serves as a communication link in Emergency Management events such as natural disasters, etc. Receives entry-level training and/or mid-level training in Telecommunications operations and procedures. As a public safety dispatcher you will be required to work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, whether natural or acts of war. This could mean you may stay for additional shifts or overnight.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Public Safety Dispatcher Recruit: Hourly Rate: $22.00.

  • High school graduate, GED or equivalent. 
  • Must be capable of being certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety in TCIC/NCIC operations within 6 months of employment or assignment. 
  • Must be capable of being certified as a Basic Telecommunications Operator by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) within one (1) year of employment or assignment.  
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which will include working all shifts, weekends, and holidays.  
  • Must pass a City-Administered typing test with a minimum typing speed of 45 words per minute.

 

Certified Public Safety Dispatcher Requirements: Hourly Rate: $22.50  

  • High school graduate, GED or equivalent. 
  • One year of experience as a Public Safety Dispatcher in a high-volume call center.  
  • Must be certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety in TCIC/NCIC operations. 
  • Must be certified as a Basic Telecommunications Operator by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).   

 

NOTE: All candidates must be able to pass a Criminal History background check PRIOR to the interview. 

If you have had a telephone or face-to-face interview for a Public Safety Dispatcher position within the last 12 months, please do not apply again until after February 21, 2024.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

One More Little Perk for Certified Public Safety Dispatchers

City of Sugar Land offers a $5,000 (gross) hiring incentive for TCOLE-licensed Telecommunicators. This hiring incentive would be payable in the following four phases:
  

  • Phase I: $750 (gross) payable on hire and will be included on their first paycheck from the City of Sugar Land;
  • Phase II: $750 (gross) payable on successful completion of the Call-taking phase of the training program, and will appear on their paycheck for the pay period immediately following this milestone;
  • Phase III: $1,000 (gross) payable on successful completion of the entire dispatch training program, and will appear on their paycheck for the pay period immediately following this milestone; and
  • Phase IV: $2,500 (gross) payable in the pay period following the employee’s second anniversary with the Public Safety Dispatch Department.

 

The employee must be actively employed by the City’s Public Safety Dispatch Department when each installment becomes payable.
