Job Duties: The Director of Planning for the City of Virginia Beach will lead a highly skilled planning and community development team that is governed by the City’s Code, Charter, and Administrative Directives. S/he will develop a forward thinking strategic vision, have strong knowledge and skills in land use, and lead a dynamic team of planning professionals in the vision and development of our City. As a City Manager appointee, this position serves at the pleasure of the City Manager and is not considered part of the merit service as defined in City Code, section 2-75. Working Conditions: https://workingcondition-summary-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/B.001479.1.pdf Minimum Requirements: PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A masters degree in Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Business Management, or a similar program and 6 years management experience; or higher-level education and experience equivalent to 12 years in fields utilizing the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed above, including 5 years at the program management or administrator level. Additional Requirements: Preferences: The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker in planning and development with a diverse knowledge/experience in the private sector, redevelopment and urban revitalization, and public infrastructure. The preferred candidate has a progressive career history into planning and development leadership roles with experience leading teams of various sizes. S/he will have a demonstrated track record of being a planning executive that is a subject matter expert in planning and community development initiatives and has experience leading and implementing comprehensive plans. VRS Contribution: All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions.
