JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under limited supervision, the Principal Planner is responsible for the administration of the City’s current or log-range planning efforts, and acts as a technical advisor to various commissions, boards, and the general public regarding the City’s overall vision for development and redevelopment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED:

• Provide support to direct reports in reviewing plats, landscaping plans, site plans, et cetera.

• Serve as lead facilitator or staff liaison for high-profile or sensitive development proposals.

• May serve as staff liaison for the Historic Landmark Commission or the Zoning Board of Adjustment.

• Serve as lead facilitator for Development Review Committee or Planning Review Committee Meetings.

• Assist with updates to the Comprehensive Plan and other strategic plans and policies.

• Attend meetings of the Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustment and / or Historic Landmark Commission.

• Compile data for Geographic Information System (GIS) and other reports.

• Review and approve building permit applications.

• Prepare, review and present department reports on zoning change requests and subdivision plats.

• Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints with professionalism and tact.

• Research and make recommendations on revisions to codes, ordinances and regulations.

• Perform demographic analysis.

• Complete other assignments and projects as directed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

• Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet programs.

• Ability to work with the public.

• Ability to read maps, plans and other drawings and documents with accuracy.

• Ability to interpret and administer development codes, ordinances and regulations.

• Ability to independently schedule work activities to accomplish a number of tasks in a timely manner.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, geography or closely related field or five years of experience in urban planning and / or development activities.

• A Master degree in planning, architecture or closely related field may be substituted for two years of experience.

DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

• Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).

• Certification from the Congress of New Urbanism (CNU-A).

2. The physical requirements of this position

• Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time.

3. The visual acuity requirements including color, depth perception, and field vision.

• The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes.
