The Shawnee Fire Department is a dedicated team of professionals striving for excellence in public safety and emergency services to protect our community. The Department is an all-hazard emergency and non-emergency services provider with career personnel. Each member is sworn to protect the lives and property of all City residents. The City of Shawnee is actively accepting applications for the position of Firefighter. The Firefighter position performs duties related to fire prevention, suppression, emergency rescue, basic life support, and first aid under emergency conditions frequently involving considerable danger.  Pay for the Firefighter Recruit position begins at $50,000 annually, excluding overtime.  The City is now offering lateral pay up to $72,087 annually for up to five years of paid, full-time Firefighting experience.

Position Responsibilities

With or without accommodations, a Firefighter must be able to:

  • Understand the basic functions of City services.
  • Conduct Fire Department tours, business and residential inspections, public education fire prevention programs, demonstrations, and presentations.    
  • Perform required emergency medical services in conjunction with EMT-B certification.  Ensure the general safety of the public.  Drive or ride in emergency vehicle/apparatus under routine and stressful conditions.
  • Operate a variety of rescue equipment and tools.  Perform emergency rescue services.  Perform post-fire salvage.  
  • Connect and lay hoses; operate hose nozzles and direct fog and water streams; raises and climb ladders.    
  • Maintain physical fitness and participate in the Fire Department annual physical.  
  • Work well with others in a collaborative environment.  Maintain the trust and confidence of co-workers, City staff and the general public. Must be able to work independent of direct supervision.  
  • Inspect and maintain emergency equipment, radios and other equipment to ensure proper operating condition.  Perform general maintenance work related to the upkeep of Fire station buildings and fire apparatus.  
  • Understand and adhere to City and department policies and procedures.  Ensure adherence to safe work practices.  
  • Comprehend and apply basic maps and geographic locations.   
  • Understand and perform basic computer programs and operations including email, MS Word/Excel, and data entry applications.  
  • Understand and perform standard mathematical computations.

Minimum Qualifications

A Firefighter Recruit must possess the following prior to the application deadline:
• High school or general equivalency diploma (GED).
• Certification under the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians AND/OR Kansas Emergency Medical Technician* (EMT).
• Successful completion of the following National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) OR International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certifications though the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute or equally recognized and accredited organization:
  • Firefighter I
  • Firefighter II
  • HAZMAT Awareness
  • HAZMAT Operations

A Firefighter Recruit must provide the following at or prior to the Staff Interview:
• Certified Physical Agility Test (CPAT) within the past 12 months*
 
*If you have already received any of these certifications, please attach them to your application.
 
Certification as a State of Kansas Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced (A), or Paramedic* is required by the end date of the internal academy that is conducted post-hire.
 

Work Schedule
Shift fire personnel work a regular pattern of 24-hour shifts in a 28 day work period. This includes: 24 hours on shift (7:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.), 24 hours off duty, 24 hours on duty, 24 hours off duty, 24 on duty, 96 hours off duty.  This schedule is often referred to as the "California Berkley Shift".

*Applicants who can not yet provide the necessary documentation for the CPAT will be required to produce a copy of the certificate at the time of the Staff Interview.
