The Police Reserve Officer is part of the Police Reserve Unit functioning under the direction and control of the River Falls Police Department.  The Police Reserve Unit exists to provide human resource for the City of River Falls and Police Department in the event of an emergency or as needed, and by providing auxiliary staff for university and community events.  The Police Reserve Unit generally consists of non-certified law enforcement officers.  Exceptions to law enforcement certification may be made at the direct discretion of the Chief of Police.

Requirement of position: Must work at a minimum 8 service hours per quarter, however, additional hours are encouraged.  The Chief of Police or the Chief’s designee may make special exceptions to this requirement at their discretion.  Flexible schedule available for evening, weekend, and weekday hours. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • Must speak and communicate clearly when operating radio, telephone and personal interaction with other employees, citizens, etc.
  • Must be able to hear, comprehend, and understand radio, telephone and in-person verbal communication.
  • Prepare and complete written reports as required using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Gather information as a part of an investigation by interviewing and obtaining statements from citizens, victims, suspects or witnesses.
  • Must be able stand and/or walk for an extended period of time without fatigue or requiring special needs or resources.
  • Must be able to recall from memory details of persons and things.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor when confronted by hostile views and opinions, verbal abuse and in antagonistic environments.
  • Operate a motor vehicle during both day and night pursuant to job responsibilities, following all traffic rules.
  • Must follow orders, work and cooperate with others, including fellow officers and employees of the police department, governmental agencies, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public.
  • Must follow instructions furnished in oral and written forms and to apply these instructions to various situations.
  • Must be able to deal with individuals and groups with understanding, tact, compassion, sensitivity and courtesy.
  • Will utilize department equipment, including communications, flashlights, equipment belts, etc.  Ability to issue warnings and citations as necessary to gain an acceptable level of voluntary compliance on the part of the public and to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
  • May be required to provide courtroom testimony as necessary.
  • Required to maintain confidential and sensitive information.
  • Perform crowd or traffic control while on assignment.
  • Comply with all training requirements of the department.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.  All functions required to be performed have not been identified.  Employees and applicants are informed that they may be called upon to perform other job-related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • No felony or other serious criminal offense convictions.
  • Valid driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing duties of this job, the employee will regularly work in outside weather conditions with exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold and heat.  The noise level in the work environment is usually at the normal communication level.  Occasional exposure to increased levels, including cheering crowds, siren, horns, etc.

While performing duties of this position, functions would require:

  • Ability to stand and walk frequently and for approximately 3 hours at a time
  • Regularly be required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or equipment and to talk and hear.
  • Occasionally lift, bend, stoop and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Work with the public that may be angry or upset
  • Required to climb and descend stairs
