The City of Arlington is a diverse metropolitan area located approximately 20 miles west of downtown Dallas and 12 miles east of downtown Fort Worth. The Arlington City Council consists of a mayor and eight council members. Five are elected from districts to represent geographic parts of the City. The mayor and three at-large districts are elected by the entire City.

The AFD is a data-driven organization seeking cost-effective solutions to meet and exceed our citizen’s needs and expectations. Arlington’s Fire Chief leads the operational and administrative sections of the Fire Department, including 911 Dispatch (for both Fire and Police), Fire Prevention, Emergency Management, Special Events, Training, Logistics, and Fleet. This position supervises Assistant Fire Chiefs, Deputy Fire Chiefs, the Communications Administrator and the Assistant to the Fire Chief.

This position requires:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Management, Public Administration, or a closely related field plus 10 years of increasingly responsible command and supervision experience in an organized fire department, including 5 years of management responsibility at the Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief or equivalent or higher level. Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
  • Experience working in a civil service agency.
  • The ability to obtain a Texas Commission on Fire Protection Standards Division Master Firefighter Certificate within 1 year of employment.
  • The ability to obtain Criminal Justice Information Services certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License, Class C.
  • Successful completion of the required pre-employment screens, which include a criminal background check and motor vehicle record review.

The minimum salary for this position starts at $190,000 and is negotiable, depending on qualifications.
