The Environmental Specialist will protect public health and the environment by ensuring compliance with federal, state and local environmental health and quality by conducting environmental inspections and public outreach.  The position provides support to Public Works Director, Environmental Manager, and other environmental-focused positions within the City surveying, inspecting, enforcing, updating, and responding to environmental programs.

The environmental programs include but are not limited to the on-site sewer facility (OSSF) program, the backflow prevention program, stormwater separate storm sewer (MS4) program, illicit discharge detection and elimination (IDDE) program, stormwater retention and detention program, liquid waste hauler program, industrial pretreatment program, citizen complaints, public education activities, and environmental investigations.  This position serves as the Designated Representative for the City’s OSSF program.

This position will generally work Monday - Friday but will also be responsible for working some weekends and afterhours for emergency response, environmental related events, and public outreach events.

What you bring to the role:

  • Work requires board knowledge in a general professional or technical field with additional, specialized training regarding environmental methods. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in environmental science, biology, chemistry or related field.  In lieu of a degree, any equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential functions of the position may suffice.
     
  • Three years of closely related experience required.
     
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License and meet City driving standards.  This position requires the use of City vehicles on City business.
     
  • Designated representative license, backflow prevention assembly tester (BPAT) license, and 40-hour hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER) certification required, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
     
  • Class D water license required, or the ability to obtain within two (2) years of hire.
