Scope of Work:

Assists with the daily operations of the Water and Wastewater labs for the City of Midland. This responsibility includes local supervision of laboratory analysis and data generation in order to ensure accuracy in the reporting of such data both internally and externally.

Monitors expenditures during the year and provides input in the development of the budget for the laboratories.

 Essential Job Duties:
  • Lab Technician duties and responsibilities as described in the Lab Technician description.
  • Responsible for training and/or assisting in training all  personnel and provide input on employee development.
  • Plans and monitors daily laboratory schedule, as well as field assignments and sending out samples on schedule to outside laboratories.
  • Assists with analyzing of the required water and wastewater sample analysis to provide professional and timely customer service.
  • Monitors the laboratory supply inventory and completes a purchasing request form  for  approval for supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Orders all required chemicals and equipment and works closely with vendors and Lab Administrator.
  • Oversees and assists with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of the results from environmental, water and wastewater samples.
  • Monitors quality control on all analysis and provides feedback on lab results to the Quality Assurance Coordinator and Lab Administrator.
  • Directs and monitors any samples sent out to an outside Lab for analysis by operations or any samples sent out for regulatory compliance of the water and wastewater systems.
  • Assists the Quality Assurance Coordinator and Lab Administrator in the maintenance of records for regulatory compliance.
  • Generates monthly reports and provides the reports to Quality Assurance Coordinator, Lab Administrator and internal customers as directed.
  • Keeps current with regulations and professional developments in the field.
  • Assist the Quality Assurance Coordinator and Lab Administrator in the research and implementation of new laboratory methods as well as in creating related documents.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
 Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Ability to sit, stand and transport self from building to building. Must have ability to drive a City  vehicle to and from various work sites. Employee will work in seasonal temperatures bending, lifting, kneeling, twisting and climbing in order to collect samples and make inspections. Employee can work with potential mechanical, chemical and electrical hazards while collecting and analyzing samples. Employee may be exposed to loud noises, chemicals, toxic fumes, air and waterborne pathogens, and mechanical equipment during the collection and analysis of samples and mixing chemicals, with the ability to detect problems. Must be able to lift in excess of 20 lbs. and climb stairs. Must be able to climb 20 ft. ladders and work effectively at that height.

 Required Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of basic microbiology and chemistry methods, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment, methods, measurements, and practices.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of mixing chemicals.
  • Skill in utilizing health and safety precautions in the collection and analysis of samples.
  • Skill in safely performing laboratory  testing, conversions, titration, chemical analysis, and pH ranges.
  • Skill in accurately performing and recording basic math calculations and data.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the public.
  • Must posses knowledge of computer software and applications.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Biology or related field. Class D Water operator license in the State of Texas preferred; or must obtain within 5 years of employment
  • Knowledge of and/or college credit hours in microbiology and chemistry preferred.
  • Previous experience with collecting and analyzing samples is preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experienced is preferred.
  • Class D water operation license in the State of Texas preferred, or must obtain within 5 years of employment.
