Description

The City of Big Spring is seeking applicants for a Streets Superintendent.  The hourly pay rate for this position is $22.979 per hour.  Interested persons should apply online at www.mybigspring.com.  This position will remain open until filled.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the daily operations of the City of Big Spring, Texas Streets department. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
  • Possession of a commercial driver’s license (CDL Class A) issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

MAJOR DUTIES, FUNCTIONS, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and functions may include the following:

  • Schedules, assigns, and monitors the work of departmental personnel.
  • Supervises and instructs employees on work methods, procedures and standards related to their assignments.
  • Evaluates the work of departmental personnel; disciplines employees as needed. 
  • Plans employees’ work schedules; approves vacation and leave requests.
  • Ensures that road construction and maintenance work meets state specifications; maintains required records and reports.
  • Makes on-site inspections of work in progress.
  • Patrols roads to detect necessary repairs and improvements, including assuring that road signs are properly installed.
  • Receives phone calls from the general public and provides information.
  • Responds to citizen complaints.
  • Supervises the regular maintenance, operation, and care of all city roadway equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowing equipment, loaders, motor graders, and paving equipment.
  • Develops the proposed annual departmental operating budget; monitors expenditures under the current budget.
  • Assists in preparations for city seal coat project, including determining mileage to be seal coated, and determining proper amounts of rock and asphalt needed for seal coat formula.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
