Description

Job Summary: This position is responsible for skilled, licensed work in the operation and maintenance of equipment in the Water Treatment Plant. Work involves the operation of water treatment facilities and equipment to ensure compliance with operating permits. This position is also responsible for preventative maintenance of plant equipment. Incumbents in this classification are fully qualified plant operators responsible for the efficient operation of water treatment equipment on an assigned shift.

 

Major Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operation of surface water treatment facility employing conventional flocculation, sedimentation and filtration technologies
  • Operate surface water plant in accordance with GA EPD regulations
  • Responsible for the safe, compliant, and economic operation of systems in the water utility area
  • Responsible for decisive and timely action in response to production and distribution tanks
  • Ability to troubleshoot system problems and make necessary corrective action steps during shift and maintain process and system operation with minimal supervision
  • Perform preventative maintenance
  • Use SCADA system to monitor and control plant operations, distribution tanks and booster pumps
  • Utilize water treatment instrumentation (turbidimeters, online chlorine analyzer, pH probes, jar test apparatus, etc)
  • Operate and troubleshoot chemical feed pumps to ensure appropriate chemical dosing
  • Conduct chemical drawdowns to determine chemical feed ppm
  • Collect samples and perform routine quality control tests. May also perform routine testing on water brought to the plant in the event of a system water leak.
  • Monitor system gauges and meters, start and stop equipment, operate valves to route and control flows, determine the proper chemical dosages, and control flow rates
  • Monitor operations of surface water intake and raw water pump equipment
  • Maintain and complete daily log books, bench test sheets and maintenance records
  • Conduct filter washes according to plant policy
  • Perform routine housekeeping and site maintenance
  • Assist with job safety analysis/safe work permitting and bench top analysis as needed
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment with internal and external personnel and regulatory agencies

 

Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and out, during cold and warm weather, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. Hazards associated with the position include, but are not limited to, working around machinery with moving parts, working around high voltage machinery, and working with dangerous chemicals. Personal Protection Equipment must be worn at all times.

 

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; five (5) years of experience or training in the field of water treatment plant operation or water chemistry preferred; Class I, Class II, or Class III Water Operator License required. Compensation is based on experience and education.
