Under administrative direction, to direct, plan, organize, coordinate, and manage the operations of the Abilene Zoological Gardens; to recommend new zoo acquisitions; and to serve as the Executive Director of the Zoological Society.




Exercises direct supervision over supervisory, professional, technical, maintenance, and clerical staff.



  1. Develop and implement zoo policies and procedures.  Plan, coordinate, and direct the activities of the zoo.
  2. Manage and provide mentorship to staff that promotes clear and concise communication.
  3. Supervise the activities of all zoo staff.
  4. Approves all acquisitions and dispositions of the animal collection.
  5. Serve as policy advisor to the Zoological Society. Plan and oversee short- and long-term zoo development expansion.
  6. Address and resolve issues involving animals, staff, and the public.
  7. Prepare, manage, and administer the Zoo budget and maintain budget controls.  Prepares for Zoological Society board approval and administers the approved zoo society budget.
  8. Create and manage reports on Zoo operations. Prepare reports for Zoological Society and others as needed.
  9. Manages all Zoo activities in a manner consistent with accreditation standards of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums; manages all zoo activities in a manner consistent with all laws and regulations regarding captive wildlife.
  10. Maintain good public relations with the schools, academic institutions, news media, and other service and community groups.  Respond to inquiries for information pertaining to the zoo. Conduct lectures before groups on zoological topics.
  11. Oversee the inventory and ordering of zoo equipment and supplies.
  12. Assist in the supervision and recruitment of volunteers.  Participate in guided tours of zoo facilities.



Serve as City and Zoological Society liaison to the community.

Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.




Knowledge of:


            Principles and practices of zoo administration.

            Care and maintenance of captive wildlife and domestic animals.

            Budgetary preparation and fiscal responsibility and management.

Regulations and laws set by local, State, Federal, and International agencies and accreditation standards set by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Education, conservation, research, marketing, and public relations programs and development of the same.

Administrative management, practices, and methods including budgeting and recordkeeping.

            Safe driving principles and practices.


Skill to:

            Operate audio-visual equipment.

Operate office equipment including computers and related software.

Safely operate a motor vehicle.


Ability to:

Prepare zoo development plans and programs related to zoo expansion, construction, and collection management.

            Work effectively with citizen groups and zoo support groups.

            Open, enter, exit, and secure animal enclosures and service areas.

            Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.  Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:


Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the administration, operation, and maintenance of zoo facilities including significant supervisory and management responsibilities is required.



A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Zoological Science, Wildlife Biology, Animal Science or a related field is required.

A graduate degree is preferred.


            License or Certificate:

A valid Texas driver’s license, the ability to obtain one within ten (10) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.


Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

            With or without accommodation, ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, and twist.

Exposure to outdoor extreme environments.

Exposure to various animal species including dangerous animals.

Ability to travel to different sites.

Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency response work is required.
