Description

GENERAL PURPOSE:  Under general supervision, performs preventive maintenance and routine services on vehicles; performs minor adjustments and repairs as directed.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

 

  • Lubricates vehicles, trucks and other equipment; changes, repairs and balances tires; inspects, adjusts and replaces belts and hoses.
  • Fills vehicle and truck fuel tanks; checks and fills fluid levels of vehicles, trucks and equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles, trucks and equipment and makes minor repairs and adjustments as assigned.
  • Performs minor mechanical repairs within scope of experience; notifies supervisors of repair problems beyond the scope of authority.
  • Maintains shop, yard, and equipment in clean and orderly condition; disposes of hazardous chemicals used in equipment servicing and maintenance, as directed.
  • Maintains records and logs of services performed and general equipment information; maintains written records of fuel, oil and lubricants dispensed.
  • Orders parts as needed, researches and selects vendors and other supply sources; maintains records of parts requisitions and inventory.
  • Picks up and delivers parts and supplies.
  • Installs auxiliary and specialized equipment.
  • May perform basic arc and acetylene welding.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed.
  • Recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND one (1) year work experience in vehicle maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment; specific technical training, certifications or license endorsements may be required for some job assignments.

     

    Required Knowledge of:

  • City policies and procedures.
  • Basic procedures of a vehicle preventive maintenance program.
  • City safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Safety standards and practices in a shop environment.
  • Procedures for the proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Federal and state safety laws and regulations, including drug and alcohol testing guidelines for CDL.

     

    Required Skill in:

  • Performing basic diagnostic tests on vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintaining vehicles according to standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Identifying safety problems.
  • Safe use of power and hand tools.
  • Maintaining accurate service records. 

     

    Physical Demands / Work Environment: 

  • Work is performed in repair and maintenance facilities and outdoors in all weather conditions, with exposure to hazardous chemicals and equipment; requires constant physical efforts, and ability to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Employee may be required to work weekends, holidays and other irregularly scheduled times. May be required to work immediately before, during or immediately after an emergency or disaster.

Starting minimum salary range is $14.68 - $17.61 per hour based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include Texas Municipal Retirement System; paid vacation and sick leave accrual; medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. EOE
