JOB SUMMARY:
Perform specialized and advanced construction, maintenance and repair of city utility structures and systems.  Complete tasks according to established policies and procedures, work independently with limited supervision, and contribute through knowledge, skills, and good work habits.
 
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:  
Essential Functions: 
  • Inspect, monitor and maintain the wastewater sewer systems of the City, clean and paint pipes, fittings, hydrants and other wastewater system components.
  • Inspect manholes to monitor sewer flow; wash and clean manholes and sewer lines to prevent flow stoppage and septic conditions; perform sewer line flushing and cleaning.
  • Assist in the installation, cleaning, maintenance and repair of sanitary wastewater lines and manholes; assist in the removal of old pipe and install new pipe lines, mains, services and manholes.
  • Enter and work in underground manholes, chambers, and vaults; assist in the inspection, maintenance and minor repair of wastewater lift stations, including lift station electrical equipment and pumps.
  • Locate and raise manhole covers to provide access to system; replace manhole rings and lids; repair manhole bases and channels.
  • Inspect, maintain and repair waste water pump stations including hydraulics, electrical and electronics; adjust pump station flows as needed.
  • Pump sewer material into tanker trucks; replace fluid into the sewage system and dispose of solid material.
  • Operate Closed Circuit Television Inspection van and equipment for the internal inspection of sewer line; maintain a video library of the City's sewage collection system.
  • Maintain and repair pump stations including electrode maintenance, changing filters and wet well washing; maintain dry wells for pump operation and cleanliness.
  • Maintain pumps including lubricating, pulling pumps to remove blockages, replace seals and valves and inspect impellers; inspect wafer and solenoid valves and clean and replace o-rings; paint pump station as needed.
  • Operate high-pressure vacuum and pump assemblies.
  • Maintain telemetry systems by monitoring signals sent from base to pump stations; replace modules and fuses as necessary.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Maintenance Services Worker II:
  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • One year experience as a Maintenance Services Worker I or any combination of knowledge, skills, and experience that would allow an individual to competently perform the duties of the position.
Maintenance Services Worker III:
  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Two years increasingly responsible experience with wastewater systems, construction or maintenance and heavy equipment operation.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Maintenance Services Worker II:
  • Valid drivers license.
  • Successful passing of a required background check.
  • Within 6 months of hire:
    • Flagging certificate
    • First aid and CPR certificates
    • Fork lift card
  • Within 12 months of hire:
    • Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement.
    • Wastewater Collection Specialist I Certificate.
    • NIMS 100 & 700 Certificates
    • CESCL (Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead) Certificate
    • Competent Person Certification
    • Confined Space Certification
Maintenance Services Worker III:
  • Valid Driver's license.
  • Successful passing of a required background check.

  • Within 12 months of hire:

Positions that require a CDL Class A are safety sensitive positions. Employment is contingent upon successful drug and alcohol screening and subject to random testing.  A successful driving abstract review will be required and an offer of employment is subject to review for both the II and III positions. 
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The following represent the physical demands that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, and involves moving throughout the community.
  • Driving and field work required.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Lift heavy objects in awkward and confined spaces, using proper lifting and rigging techniques.
  • Bending, stretching, walking and standing for extended periods.
  • Work is performed in confined spaces.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials and noise from equipment.
  • Work is performed within the right of way, and regularly in high traffic conditions.
