Scope of Work:

Performs engineering and design tasks under the direct supervision of a registered professional engineer. Tasks will include assisting in management of construction projects, project design, reviewing new subdivision plats and development plans, and evaluating drainage studies.

Helps prepare equipment budgets for surveying, inspection and engineering. Provides recommendations and budget data for new or replacement equipment purchased for the department by Purchasing or IS.

 Essential Job Duties:
  • Prepares plans, cost estimates, construction timelines, specifications, bid documents, and oversee construction for water, wastewater, street, and drainage projects.
  • Review subdivision plats, drainage plans, public improvements, and drainage improvements of new subdivisions for compliance with city standards, specifications, and ordinances.
  • Oversees activities occurring at project construction sites, resolving conflicts between plans and specifications.
  • Perform flood plain studies using computer modeling.
  • Assist with enforcing flood plain ordinances.
  • Review commercial site plans and driveway permits.
  • Maintain construction files for projects.
  • Coordinate work with surveyors to obtain necessary field information to design and implement city projects.
  • Maintain public relations with citizens, engineers, contractor, and surveyors in private practice.
  • Perform related duties as required.


 Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Ability to sit, stand and drive a vehicle to and from work sites. Employee will be exposed to seasonal temperatures while making field inspections of projects. May occasionally be required to lift and carry test equipment.


 Required Qualifications:

Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record. If applicant does not currently hold a Texas license, they must obtain one within three months of hire. 

Employee communicates with other employees both within the department and in other departments concerning needs and requirements for design/construction projects and developer projects including the subdivision of land. The employee also communicates with engineers, developers, contractors and utility companies concerning city policy and the application and interpretation of city specifications and requirements. Employee communicated with material manufacturers and suppliers to determine suitability of materials for use in anticipated projects. Attends meetings of the Planning Commission and other government bodies to represent the Engineering Services Division.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks assignments. Ability to observe, read, and interpret written materials and construction drawings. Knowledge of design procedures of water distribution systems, sanitary sewer collection systems, storm sewer systems, paving and related items. Ability to effectively present technical material to members of the general public. Ability to use testing equipment and a variety of machines including personal computers.

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related engineering field. Prefer certification as Engineer-in-Training. Must be able to gain professional engineering license within four years of hire date.
