Description

PRIMARY DUTY:

Under the direction of the City Marshal, provides support to the Municipal Court by serving and clearing outstanding Class “C” misdemeanor warrants.  Provides security in the Municipal Court Building and Courtroom during court proceedings. Provides back up support to police department on occasion.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

[S = Sedentary (0-10 lbs); L = Light (10-25 lbs); M = Medium (25-50 lbs);  

H = Heavy (50-100 lbs); VH = Very Heavy (over 100 lbs)].

Job Duties

S-H

Serves and clears warrants issued by the court by field contact, phone contact and physical arrest if necessary.

S

Responsible for maintaining accurate records and keep city materials, reports and documents confidential as provided by law.

S

Provide assistance to court staff in preparing up-to-date warrant lists.

S

Provide security:

  • In courtroom during court proceedings; establish decorum
  • In the court offices and court facilities
  • Screens visitors for weapons, contraband and escorts defendants to and from the Courtroom
  • Daily bank runs for the city

Assist the Judge and court staff during all court proceedings serving as Bailiff.

Assist court staff prepare paperwork, notices and media releases for the annual warrant roundup program.

S

Attend meetings with other cities and counties involved with the warrant roundup program as needed.

S-VH

On needed occasions, provide support to police department and perform duties of peace officer including acting on violations of laws, pursue and apprehend offenders, transport prisoners, book subjects into jail, secure crime scenes, tag and process evidence, search persons, property and premises, take statements and question witnesses, write reports and complete other required paperwork.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory responsibility.

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to read and understand reports, memos, manuals, policies, rules, regulations, laws ordinances and statutes.
  • Must be able to write accurate, thorough and complete reports.
  • Knowledge of basic math to calculate speeding violations, elapsed time and accident reconstruction.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal criminal laws; laws relevant to police conduct; human

          behavior and motivation; techniques of self-defense; current police methods and practices.

  • Knowledge of city personnel policies, department policies and procedures and City ordinances.
  • Knowledge of bond procedures necessary for prisoner release.
  • Must be able to use reasoning to make timely, accurate decisions under a variety of circumstances.
  • Must be able to exert force as needed to intervene in conflict situations or subdue suspects.
  • Competent weapons proficiency; shoot a pistol, rifle, or shotgun; discharge pepper spray canister; clean and maintain duty weapon.
  • Ability to report to work regularly and on time.
  • Ability to get along and work well with others.
  • Regulations governing departmental activities.
  • Judicial processes and various types of court documentation
  • Municipal Court policies and procedures.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with staff, City departments, court personnel, outside agencies, contractors, vendors, community organizations, and the general public.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs

     

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 30 semester hours of college is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience Law Enforcement operations or Baliff experience; or an equivalent including military service

                                       

    CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) peace officer certification.
  • Valid class C Texas driver's license with good driving record
