Salary is DOQ - minimum is $38,875 annual

Under general supervision of the Building & Permitting Director, this position is responsible for performance of surveillance and control measures in specific environmental health programs, and related work as required. This is a highly visible position requiring constant interaction with the public in situations that may involve conflict requiring tact, judgment, and diplomacy. Requires strong problem solving skills and excellent public relations.

 

Typical Duties:

 

  1. Recommends, prepares, and enforces regulations and ordinances in specific areas of environmental health;
  2. Permits & inspects retail food establishments (permanent, temporary, and seasonal/ special events);
  3. Permits & inspects commercial/semi-public, and public swimming pools;
  4. Reviews and approves construction and remodeling plans for food operations;
  5. Conducts education in food sanitation and safety for food establishment employees, the general public, and/or interested civic organizations, as requested;
  6. Investigates sanitation and nuisance complaints within the city limits or the one (1) mile ETJ service area of Granbury; issues written warnings or citations for repeat or continuing violations;
  7. Performs related work in air pollution control, water pollution control, insect control, and noise pollution control;
  8. Performs limited building inspections concerning plumbing and fire protection as related to food establishments;
  9. Permits and performs inspections of hotel, motel, rooming and boarding establishments, for compliance with minimum standards; 
  10. Conducts surveillance and complaint-initiated inspections of nuisance ordinance violations, including but not limited to high grass  weeds, substandard structures, stagnant water, unclean premises, and other related violations;
  11. Communicates effectively with the general public and city staff; Writes accurate reports and interprets local and state health and safety codes; Maintains records and files.

 

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental health science,  public health, or related field.
  • Current Texas Registered Sanitarian (R.S.) Certification. 
  • Texas Code Enforcement Officer (C.E.O.)  certification to obtained within six (6) months.  Related certifications such as O.S.S.F. (On-site Sewage Facility) Designated Representative and C.P.O. (Certified Pool Operator) preferred.
  • Current Class C Texas driver’s license, with clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of Windows, Outlook, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Knowledge of PC-related applications
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret, apply, and enforce City codes and ordinances pertaining to public health and building codes; prepare detailed reports.
  • Professional demeanor, and good verbal skills including the ability to encourage compliance in a positive and tactful manner.

     

    Physical Requirements:  

     

    Physical strength and agility to climb ladders for building inspections, sign code enforcement and health code compliance.  Requires the ability to work indoors and outdoors in cold, heat and extreme temperature changes; some exposure to chemical and toxic waste hazards.  The position may require the ability to focus pay attention to close detail, for extended periods of time; reading complex spreadsheets, codes, and other technical plans and documentation.  Hearing and vision must be satisfactory to the degree that duties may be performed effectively and safely. 

     

Work Environment:    

 

The work environment is highly visible, and professional.  Situations requiring the use of quick judgment, tact, problem-solving, and flexibility are frequent.  Approximately 50% of work time is spent indoors, in an office setting; 50% “field work”, including time in retail food establishments, driving to/from properties while conducting compliance work and/or investigational process.
