PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION The purpose of this classification is to execute multiple routine and unexpected work requests, including maintaining lawns, landscapes, and tennis courts, setting up and breaking down for programs and special events, delivering mail, and checking and fueling departmental vehicles.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. The omission of specific statements of the duties or functions does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Picks up debris and litter; cleans shelters and grills. Sets up and breaks down special events; hooks up and breaks down sound system for concerts; sets up temporary in-line skating rink; sets up risers, chairs, and music stands for concerts; hangs and takes down art for art show; hands quilts and sets up quilt racks. Loads and unloads equipment. Measures and paints football, soccer, and baseball fields. Opens gates and restrooms. Deals with the public; directs citizens; answers questions. Attends meetings and seminars, as required.
Parks Maintenance Workers assigned to the Special Events Crew perform the following additional duties: Sets up regular programs; sets up tables and chair; breaks down and cleans up after program. Fills ice and water coolers; cleans shuffleboard courts; maintains bathrooms when needed; replaces basketball nets. Checks, cleans, and fuels departmental vehicles; takes vehicles to shop for repairs; prepares vehicle work orders. Delivers interdepartmental mail to all recreational buildings. Changes marquee signs; installs and removes signs at various locations in the City. Paints tables, signs, and parts of buildings; assembles office furniture. Drives City officials; drives visually impaired individuals to and from events; transports tables, chairs, tents, etc.; makes pick-ups and deliveries to businesses.
Parks Maintenance Workers assigned to Parks Division or Forestry & Grounds Division perform the following additional duties: Performs lawn and landscape maintenance; mows with riding, walk-behind, and reel mower; edges and line trims; trims trees, hedges, and ground cover; rakes and removes debris; applies mulch; controls weeds; fertilizes landscape areas; controls weed and insects; lays sod. Operates light equipment like lawn mowers, vans, pick-up trucks, weed eaters, and edger. Uses front-end loader, chain saw dump truck and backhoe if necessary. Inspects irrigation system; performs vehicle inspections; inspects equipment and grounds for safety hazards; secures, repairs, and reports hazards. Prepares for hurricanes and clean up.
Parks Maintenance Workers assigned to Tennis Center perform the following additional duties: Brushes tennis courts; lines courts; waters courts; rakes courts; resurfaces courts. Operates golf cart with required tools and equipment for court maintenance; drives city vehicles; performs general custodial duties. Replaces lines and nets; replaces wind screens. Cleans patios and patio furniture; empties trash. Assists in clubhouse operations; assists during tournaments.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Transports customers to and from programs. Provides phone coverage on as need basis. Performs other related duties as required.
COMMUNICATION COMPETENCIES Effectively communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, contractors, engineers, utility companies, vendors, outside agencies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Accurately and expeditiously receives and delivers messages and information to the appropriate individuals. Ability to prepare accurate and thorough written records and reports. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervisory direction. Ability to understand and quickly and accurately follow brief oral and written instructions on moderately complex matters. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with Supervisor, customers, other employees, other departments, other governmental and regulatory agencies, and the general public as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of landscaping maintenance procedures and processes. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession. Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions while performing maintenance tasks. Ability to effectively interact with coworkers, supervisors and other department staff, as well as the public and outside agencies. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, plans, instructions, and all other relevant reference documentation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or valid equivalent; supplemented by 5 months previous experience involving lawn and landscape maintenance, tennis court maintenance, or special events/program set-up. Must possess and maintain a valid Class E Florida driver’s license.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS / ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 60 pounds). Sensory Requirements: Tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, or pathogenic substances.
