Description

Summary of Position:

Works under the supervision of the Professional Standards Sergeant assisting children cross the street in marked school zones to ensure the safe crossing of all school-aged children while on route to and from school.

Schedule: 2 hours per day between the timeframes 7:00 a.m.to  9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic at strategic locations dictated by students traveling to and from school during assigned times on regular school days.
  • Assists in safely crossing school-aged children while on route to and from school.
  • Reports malfunctioning safety equipment (i.e., school zone flashers, signal lights, etc.) or any other obstructions that may interfere with safety of children to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Reports suspicious vehicles and speed violators to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Provides information to citizens such as school information and general geographical directions as requested.
  • Observes all traffic conditions in assigned area and helps children across street intersection to ensure safe crossing conditions.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

 Minimum Qualifications:

Education or Training:  Must have valid driver's license or a valid Identification Card issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety.  Must have own telephone and transportation.  Must attend orientation or training class on vehicular and pedestrian traffic control.  First Aid training and CPR certification or ability to obtain within first six (6) months of employment.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

 

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of provisions of traffic laws.
  • Ability to see and hear sufficiently to identify safety hazards.
  • Ability to use good judgment and reasoning ability to avoid subjecting children to dangerous traffic conditions.
  • Must have reasonable physical stamina to observe traffic and escort children across streets.
  • Ability to safely escort children across the street
  • Must have valid driver's license or a valid Identification Card issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety
  • Must have own telephone and transportation
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions and work at various job sites on a temporary basis.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check. No felony convictions.
  • Ability to work two (2) hours per day within the timeframes of: 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Ability to work tactfully and communicate with children of all ages.
  • Skill in oral communication.
