The Mayor, City Council and City staff have an established culture of professionalism and respect for the others’ role in the organization. The organization is dedicated to providing high-quality services that positively impact Decatur residents, businesses, and visitors.  The City is seeking a candidate that is excited to participate in the advancement of Decatur’s “One Decatur” Community Development Plan while bringing a positive and energized attitude into a collaborative work environment.  All City department heads report to, and are accountable to, the Mayor and City Council.  The City’s operating budgets total around $63.8 million. The City’s equalized assessed value exceeds $962 Million and has a bond rating of AA by Standard & Poor’s Corporation and Aa2 by Moody’s Investor Services Inc.

Decatur’s Director of Planning and Development is transitional in succession to Director of Development who plans to retire summer 2020.  This position is responsible for assisting the Director of Development in providing leadership and directing the managerial, administrative, customer service, and/or technical/specialized work functions associated with the City’s Community Development, Code Enforcement, Planning and Engineering Departments. 

The Director of Planning and Development has the primary responsibilities of: providing updates and information to the Mayor and City Council; coordinating with other city departments to resolve interdepartmental and city-wide issues as well as coordination of projects and activities; developing strong relationships with local, state and national agencies to develop and recruit businesses; recommending and overseeing the enforcement of various codes and ordinances; and overseeing the Federal Flood Plain Management Program.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum 5 years’ experience in urban planning, economic growth and community development.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Architecture, Planning, Construction, Engineering or related field.  Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Prior managerial and supervisory experience, preferably with dynamic cross functional teams and in a similar setting.
