Hours: full-time, Mon.-Fri. 8am-5pm

JOB SUMMARY:

Under general direction of the Building Services Manager/Building Official, the Plans Examiner reviews construction plans to ensure compliance with the City’s adopted codes, regulations and ordinances; assists with inspections; and advises the construction community and other department staff on building code requirements.   

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Review plan specifications and calculations of new construction, additions and alterations to residential and commercial buildings to determine compliance with building codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  2. Coordinate projects with the Building Services Manager/Building Official, the Planning Department, Code Compliance Coordinator, the City’s inspection consultant, and other departments.
  3. Interact with individuals at the public counter to issue building permits and answer questions regarding building regulations.
  4. Provide quality customer service by conferring with the construction community and the general public to explain and interpret code requirements.
  5. Assist with field inspection as needed during all phases of construction, including landscape installations.
  6. Investigate complaints of substandard structures and work performed without a building permit.
  7. Prepare and maintain a variety of records, correspondence and reports related to plans examination activity using City software.
  8. Interpret ordinances, building codes and regulations; advise on inquiries relating to construction installations and materials; and prepare written comments to the applicant related to submitted plans.
  9. Communicate effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public in writing, in person, and on the telephone.
  10. Assist in other department and City functions as needed.
  11. Perform other tasks as directed.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. One (1) to three (3) years’ experience in plan review and/or building codes and regulations.
  3. ICC Certification as General Plans Examiner or Permit Technician preferred.
  4. Trade certifications and/or licenses preferred.
  5. Knowledge of building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical codes, and energy codes.
  6. Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate professionally and with tact.
  7. The ability to work independently and with teams.
  8. The ability to read complex manuals, ordinances, building codes and detailed plans, and explain related materials to other inspectors, developers, contractors and others.
  9. Intermediate skills in MS Word and competent in the use of Windows-based software, programs, and digital document systems.
  10. Strong attention to detail, effective organization skills, and successful time and project management ability.
  11. Valid drivers’ license and safe driving record.
