Claims Processor

Summary: Under basic supervision, processes insurance claims in a timely and efficient manner; processes claims in compliance with City policies and procedures, and according to all legal and procedural requirements.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  •  Examines claims for validity; reviews claim forms and accident reports for accuracy, completeness, and clarity of information; processes claims according to all legal and procedural requirements, and City policies.
  • Facilitates communications with employees and service providers on claim status and issues to be resolved.
  • Maintains computer database, case files, and claims records; records and updates required documentation, and researches discrepancies; prepares necessary forms and documentation.
  • Supports the departmental operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED required; AND two years of computer and customer service experience, experience in the health/insurance industry/medical billing is beneficial but not required.  

Knowledge of:

  • Principles of loss control and claims administration.

  • Claims processing rules, regulations, codes, procedures, and policies.

  • Record keeping and technical reporting principles and procedures.

  • Business computers, and standard and specialized software applications.

Skill in:

  • Processing and evaluating insurance claims.

  • Entering data into computer with skill and accuracy.

  • Explaining City claims administration policies and procedures.

  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

License and certification requirements: A valid Texas State Driver's License is required.  

Physical demands and working environment: Work is performed in a standard office environment and training classes.

Skills test: Typing test of 35 wpm with 7 or less errors. 10-key test with 70% or better.
