Heavy Truck / Equipment Technician I - Bus (Working Title: Transit Maintenance Technician):    Perform skilled diagnosis, repair and preventative maintenance on medium and heavy-duty diesel and hybrid fixed route buses, and gas-powered support vehicles. Perform service calls as required. Work with operations department to ensure buses are ready for daily service requirements.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening

This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening.  An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five years.

Duties:

  • Diagnose, maintain, overhaul, inspect and repair fixed route bus systems and components such as engines, transmissions, electrical, pneumatic, braking and hydraulic systems, wheel chair ramps and ADA equipment, fare-boxes and electronic equipment. Utilize laptop computer, hand held scanners, computer software, technical manuals and on-line media to correctly diagnose and repair vehicle systems and components. Perform service calls and trade buses out for operations department as required.
  • Diagnose, maintain, inspect and repair support vehicles systems and components such as engines, transmissions, electrical, hydraulic, and braking.
  • Enter repair information, labor hours and detailed notes into maintenance information system. Enter hours worked into time card system daily. Accurately fill out PMI forms and submit to supervisor in timely manner.
  • Clean shop, grounds, vehicle wash areas, and vehicles as required by operational need. Repair shop equipment as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:  A High School Diploma or its equivalent and two (2) years of experience in automotive, heavy-duty bus or medium/heavy truck repair.  Must obtain CDL Class "B" with Air Brake and Passenger endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain in order to stay qualified within job classification. 

Preferred Qualification:     ASE certification in Transit Bus Brakes (H4) and Transit Bus steering and suspension (H5) not required at time of hire but should be obtained within the first year of employment. EPA section 608 and 609 certifications preferred but not required at time of hire.

Job Based Competencies:  

  • ​Knowledge of methods, materials, operation, repair, and tools of the heavy-duty bus trade.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions inherent to trade.
  • Ability to maintain records electronically and manually.
  • Ability to read and comprehend service manuals and electronic media and follow verbal and written instruction of supervisory staff.
  • Ability to adhere to applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures implemented by management and county.
  • Must supply own basic tool set and rolling toolbox upon hire.

Physical Demands:   Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects as necessary.  May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessive poundage of more than 50 pounds.   Individual must regularly bend, stretch, use arms, back and legs to perform job task requirements required to accomplish assigned duties.
