OPEN UNTIL FILLED

Work on all aspects of promoting and advocating a Best Friends-supported Community Cat Program (CCP) at Abilene Animal Shelter. This program involves spaying/neutering, vaccinating, ear-tipping, and returning community cats brought into the shelter to their home colony location.  

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

This position may exercise supervision over program volunteers.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Oversee and manage the community Cat Pilot Project, which includes creating a plan of action; creating and updating client cases; managing location releases, and TNR groups.

Build and manage shelter relationships for enhanced program success.  Review complaint calls; train staff; educate the public, and showcase the program’s successes.

Identify and prioritize the needs for CCP Cats; coordinate intake by diverting community cats; identify and implement solutions for colony locations, and prioritize and manage colony locations.

Liaison and coordinate with veterinarian clinics for surgical procedures.

Manage and recruit program volunteers, to include delivering traps and supplies; maintaining records; setting up traps, and operating a trap loan system.

Manage database entry for the program; provide monthly and year-end reports.

Perform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

And experience with feral cats and trapping cats.

Cat health issues, behavior, handling, and care.

Safely trapping cats.

Skill to:

Maintain accurate recordkeeping and produce monthly program reports.

Handle sensitive and confidential situations.

Manage volunteers and a volunteer program.

Interact with the general public.

Ability to:

Work independently and use good judgment while working within established guidelines.

Work with, handle, and care for cats.

Safely set up and operate cat traps.

Multi-task, think quickly, and act effectively.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.  Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

Three (3) years of experience in an animal shelter; wildlife rehabilitation, veterinarian clinic, or an equivalent position is required.

Two (2) years of experience in office administration or project management, is preferred.

Education/Training:

A high school diploma or GED is required.

College level course work or supplemental training is preferred.

License or Certificate:

A valid current Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ten (10) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Special Requirements:

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

With or without accommodation, ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

Ability to work in an office environment and use a computer for extended periods of time.

Ability to work various hours including holidays, weekends, late, early, or split shifts as necessary.
