Multnomah County, Oregon (Pop. 813,300) Multnomah County is seeking a progressive, visionary leader with a passion for animal care to serve as its next Animal Services Director.

Multnomah County has a population exceeding 813,300 and a diverse metro area of 2.35 million. Although the county’s beautiful and progressive city of Portland has the cultural and recreational opportunities of a large city, it has the heart of a small town. In addition to Portland, Multnomah County encompasses cities such as Fairview, Gresham, Lake Oswego, Maywood Park, Milwaukie, Troutdale and Wood Village. Portland is just thirty minutes from the Cascade Mountains, with hiking, world-class ski resorts, camping and fishing. Portland lies in the Marine West Coast climate region, marked by warm, dry summers and rainy but mild winters. Portland is a foodie’s dream, with regional cuisine featuring microbreweries and micro distilleries, local wine, seafood, and produce; along with one of the country’s largest food cart scenes and the quirky Voodoo Donuts, home of the maple-bacon donut. The Animal Services Director is a Division Manager position reporting to the Director of Community Services for Multnomah County.  Please note the following about this exciting opportunity:

• Multnomah County Animal Services is a progressive, open admission, public animal care and control agency guided by its mission to protect “the health, safety and welfare of animals and people in Multnomah County.”  The County provides humane shelter for the community’s lost, stray and unwanted animals. The County’s shelter hospital has been accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association since 2006.
• The Animal Services Division has 59 employees who along with volunteers provide 24-hour response to animal emergencies and public safety incidents involving animals as well as lost and found services, pet adoption services, foster care opportunities and a wide range of animal care services.  The Division’s budget is $8.6 million.   The Animal Services Division is a founding member of the Animal Shelter Alliance of Portland (ASAP) a coalition of the largest animal welfare organizations serving the four-county Portland metropolitan area. ASAP’s mission is to end the euthanasia of social, healthy and treatable cats and dogs in the local shelters by collaborating on spay/neuter programs along with educational and outreach efforts.  These collaborative efforts in addition to the staff’s dedicated service to the animals under its care is reflected in the County’s live release rate which regularly exceeds 90%.
• Candidates will ideally have a bachelor’s degree in public health, business administration, public policy or related field and at least five years’ experience as a subject matter expert in animal care services, programs and collaborative efforts.  Any combination of education, experience and training that will provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. Strong leadership and administrative skills, preferably in a large, complex organization will be critical to success in this position.  Candidates must have the ability to inspire and lead  employees utilizing modern management practices.  Candidates with experience in a leadership position with an animal welfare organization or animal shelter or in a position with transferrable skills in a non-animal shelter position are highly desired. 

The annual salary range for the Animal Services Director is $96,670 - $145,007 DOQ. This is the full salary range for the position.  The finalist candidate's starting salary will be based on the candidate's qualifications and experience.
