Description | Ideally located in northeast Kansas, Johnson County was founded on August 25, 1855, six years prior to Kansas becoming the 34th state to enter the Union. Johnson County is the growth engine of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The County boasts nationally ranked schools, a low crime rate, high quality neighborhoods, a low cost of living, and a variety of cultural, entertainment, and recreational opportunities. Johnson County is recruiting a dynamic and energetic leader for the position of Director of the Department of Health and Environment. The Department of Health and Environment (DHE), with locations in the cities of Olathe and Mission, Kansas, has approximately 135 employees and an $18 million budget. Services provided by the department include education and prevention, environmental inspection programs (air quality, on-site wastewater, and pools), childcare licensing, and oversight of solid waste, WIC, laboratory, women’s health clinics, immunizations, and epidemiology. The department also provides administrative support for the newly formed Medical Examiner’s Office. The Director will lead DHE in fulfilling its mission utilizing the values of a high performing organization and innovative approaches. The selected candidate must hold a master’s degree in public health, public administration, environmental science, biology, nursing, health care administration, or a related field, and have 15 years of progressively responsible public or environmental health experience and five (5) years of demonstrated administrative and supervisory experience (or an equivalent level of experience) in a comparable environment, preferably in the public sector. Working knowledge of public health and environmental laws and regulations, public health theory, communicable disease etiology, epidemiology, public health clinical function, laboratory utilization, pollution control science and practice, air quality science, and sanitation science and practice is preferred. The salary range for this position is $110,381 to $151,774 annually and will be commensurate with experience.
