Description

GENERAL PURPOSE:  Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical functions in support of New Braunfels Public Library operations; catalogs and processes library materials; assists with maintenance functions of the library collection; staffs the public service desks; and performs other related duties as assigned.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

 

  • Assists in ensuring the delivery of high-quality library services to patrons and the timely processing of library materials.
  • Evaluates donations for consideration as additions to the Library’s collection.
  • Catalogs new and/or donated library materials; searches, creates, and edits cataloging records; generates and attaches spine labels to cataloged books.
  • Processes library materials for circulation.
  • Provides quality control and assists in ensuring patron materials requests are processed in a timely manner.
  • Works to train library staff and volunteers to process and repair library materials.
  • Researches and resolves circulation issues involving library materials.
  • Performs a variety of circulation duties including checking books in and out, issuing library cards, and collecting library fees and fines.
  • Staffs the public service desks as assigned; responds to patron inquiries; assists patrons in locating library materials and/or utilizing public computers.
  • Assists with the weeding and maintenance of the collection.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in English or a related field; and one (1) year technical services experience in a public library environment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Required Licenses or Certifications:  None.

 

Required Knowledge of:

  • Public library operations and services.
  • Collection development and maintenance principles.
  • Circulation, cataloging, and reference practices.
  • Library computer systems, software, and databases.
  • Customer service standards and protocol.

     

    Required Skill in:

  • Coordinating and performing a variety of technical library services functions.
  • Assisting in ensuring the delivery of high-quality library services to patrons.
  • Participating in the development and maintenance of assigned library collections.
  • Cataloging and processing a variety of library materials in a timely manner.
  • Staffing the public service desk and providing assistance to patrons.

     

    Preferred knowledge/experience with:

  • MarcMagician and Bookwhere for cataloging.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

     

    Physical Demands / Work Environment: 

  • Work is performed in a library environment and is subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting of objects up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to push loaded book carts and lift/carry library materials and equipment.
  • May be required to work immediately before, during or immediately after an emergency or disaster.

Starting minimum salary range is $14.11 - $16.93 per hour based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include Texas Municipal Retirement System; paid vacation and sick leave accrual; medical, dental, vision, and life insurance. EOE
