Independence, Kansas (Pop. 8598; $23 million budget; 118 FTE’s), located in Southeast Kansas, is a beautiful, family-oriented community with great local amenities, strong industry, and an engaged citizenry. The City of Independence is seeking a City Manager with a strong degree of professionalism and open communication. The City Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the city, supervises activities of all employees, and informs the commission regarding city business.

Independence possesses excellent recreational facilities, a free zoo, an airport, water and wastewater treatment plants, police and fire/EMS departments. All together, these make Independence a highly diversified community with a small-town feel. The City operates under a Commission-Manager form of government.

The commission seeks candidates with strong interpersonal skills who can communicate well with citizens, businesses, the city commission, and city staff, providing transparency throughout the city. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field, a minimum of eight years local government experience; a master’s degree is preferred. The successful candidate must also be able to competently create and manage budgets, oversee and develop personnel, and foster excellent relationships.

Competitive benefits.  Salary $105,000 - $120,000 DOQ.
