Household Hazardous Waste Attendant

Summary: Under general supervision, monitors and assists the public with the disposal of household hazardous waste material and recycle items at the HHW facility. Ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and standard procedures. Monitors the disposal of the bulk and tree limbs at the facility drop off points.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists public with the disposal of household hazardous waste material at the HHW facility.
  • Monitors and inspects cargos for disposal and recycle.
  • Educates the public about proper handling of HHW material.
  • Ensures constant and efficient communication with local, state and federal entities pertaining to the operations and regulations of the Household Hazardous Waste Program.
  • Provides customer service and assistance to City of Odessa residents; assist in the removal of items from vehicles when required.
  • Maintains daily logs of residents who visit HHW facility.
  • Directs and instructs customers to the proper HHW storage areas, bulk drop off bins or proper tree limb drop off points.
  • Maintains HHW facility grounds, building and oil storage area in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Responsible for reporting issues/problems and violations to HHW Officer.
  • Drive in a safe and responsible manner while operating City vehicles.
  • Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.
  • Supports the relationship between City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitor and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High School Diploma or GED required. One year of work related experience dealing with heavy public contact. The ideal candidate will have experience in displaying courtesy, tach and diplomacy.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic safety procedures and regulations.
  • Basic computers and standard MS Office software applications for data entry.
  • Local, state and federal laws pertaining to Household Hazardous Waste.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively both in writing and verbally.
  • Display courtesy, tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Work with diverse groups of people and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Provide superior internal/external customer service.
  • Bend, climb, kneel and lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Work under adverse weather conditions.
  • Work special event and weekends.
  • Closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Must be able to operate a bobcat, skid steer, lawnmower and front end loader.

License and certification requirements: A valid Texas State Driver's License is required.

Physical demands and working environment: Work is performed indoors, outdoors and at City facilities; requires constant physical efforts, and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; safety precautions must be followed, including use of safety equipment. City approved safety shoes must be worn.
