Job Description

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of police and law enforcement activities. Tasks are service and protection oriented, and include collecting and dispensing information, arbitrating disputes, providing assistance, protecting and recovering property, preventing crime, investigating, and providing other public protection services. Incumbents perform duties in accordance with state statutes and established departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. Performs related work as required.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by Basic Peace Officer License; CPR training; supplemented by completion of in-service training, as directed, for assignment to other primary functional areas; possession of a valid state driver's license.  Must be able to obtain Emergency Care Attendant (ECA) certification within 18 months of hire date, or as reasonable within scheduling constraints per Police Chief approval.

Supplemental Information

  • All applicants for sworn positions must:
  • Be at least 21 years of age or older.
  • Be fingerprinted and undergo state, local and national criminal records check.
  • Not be on court-ordered community supervisor or probation for any criminal offense.
  • Not have been convicted of a Class B misdemeanor or above within the last five (5) years.
  • Not have been convicted of any prior felonies.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • Be subjected to a thorough, comprehensive background investigation and interview.
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent or have twelve (12) semester hours credit from an accredited college or university.
  • Must pass state medical, mental, polygraph and drug testing requirements.
  • Not have been discharged from any military service under less than honorable conditions.
  • Have an insurable driving record according to the city's insurance policy.
  • Not have been convicted of more than five (5) moving violations within the past three (3) years.
  • Have no prior DWI convictions.
  • Not have left employment with this agency under less than honorable conditions.
  • Must hold a Texas peace Officer's license through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standard and Education prior to participation in any law enforcement duties.
  • Be truthful in responses in their application and personal history statement.
  • Any false statement made by the applicant shall be grounds for immediate rejection or termination if discovered after date of hire.

SHIFT SCHEDULE   Sworn Police Officer are scheduled 12 hour shifts with rotating Fri/Sat/Sun off.  The schedule is based on 84 hours every 2 weeks with 4 hours of built in overtime which is reflected in annual pay. All hours worked beyond 80 hours in the 2 week pay period is considered overtime. Actual overtime is not a guaranteed and depends upon several factors.
