Essential Job Duties:

  1. Perform all job duties listed on assistant state’s attorney job description.
  2. Conduct more complex, difficult criminal prosecution and civil lawsuits, and present evidence in court.
  3. Assist in the hiring process, training, monitoring and evaluating work performance, and assigning cases to new attorneys in the agency.
  4. Mentor assistant state’s attorneys to give guidance and develop research and prosecution skills on cases assigned.
  5. Review civil law issues as assigned regarding contracts and employee personnel disputes.
  6. Advise elected and appointed officials and county employees as to their legal rights, represent agencies in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies of government.
  7. Maintain and establish working relationships with regional judiciary, and a close liaison with county officials, particularly state’s attorneys, judges, and other attorneys.
  8. Supervise support staff and perform other administrative duties in the absence of the State’s Attorney.
  9. Perform other duties as required and assigned.

Accountabilities:

  1. Ensure that legal code of ethics is upheld by performing duties in a responsible, professional manner and maintaining confidentiality and respect for the rights of others.  
  2. Ensure accuracy on all documentation, narratives and reports regarding criminal and civil lawsuits and assigned caseloads by reviewing materials, evidence, and other admissible information before presenting information in court.
  3. Create a positive and productive work atmosphere by communicating and maintaining a professional manner with supervisors, employees, court personnel, clients, and the general public.

Job Qualifications, Experience and Education:

  1. Must have a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law in the State of North Dakota, with three or more  years of experience in criminal litigation preferred; five years experience in active law practice required.
  2. Must posses a valid Class D North Dakota driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  3. Must have reasonable interpersonal communication skills and have a good working relationship with the professional staff, law enforcement agencies, court staff, and the general public.
